Getting the Wheeling Fever
I've been slowly picking off things that could be what I see as a lack of power. I've been in search of my EGR valve.

Looking at the books, and looking at my engine....they don't match, anyone? Buller Buller Buller???

This is supposed to be a California truck,

Look at your manufacturing plate on the door jamb and see if your truck was manufactured in 1990 as a '91 model. The '90 models didn't have EGR, so maybe a few early '91s were made without it.

The second possibility is that the engine isn't original - it looks fine, but I haven't seen valve covers that color.... maybe just a repaint.

The exhaust manifolds appear to be from a '90 engine, because the exhaust manifold flange for to the heat tube is missing and would normally be found where the cutout is on the heat shield.

See, and the valve covers.... they look like they were replacements but looking at what was and was not serviced on this thing, why do valves and/or top end...or head gasket for that matter when so many little things were not done. There are new hoses that do not match (different suppliers, different ages) if it was taken to a nickel-dime mechanic, they would have gone for easy stuff like shocks. The lifters were so sticky when I got this thing, you would have thought it was a diesel. I tried to e-mail the original owner, but no response, that was a few months ago. I don't think the owner of this was military, because she was allegedly the mother in law (only drove it to the grocery store on sunny days ect ect) of the guy selling it, but it was QUITE obvious there was a kid driving it. Well, guess I'll dig out my Wiggy and try that. The exhaust seems OK when it starts and warms up, but I messed with a few screws and knobs since... I was considering taking the cat out and driving it for a day without.

It was. It appears to have been rebuilt - at least the upper end - painted upper intake (no problem), battleship gray valve covers (looks like a reman - no self-respecting rebuilder would do that), wires out of place (they shouldn't run on top of the radiator hose) and incorrect hose clamps (just begging to cut those wires)..... but then I'm sorta picky.

Not touching....it was just the angle... but there is no way to run them under the water hose.

This is an '89 and there is a difference - the '89 distributor wires exit the bottom of the bowl instead of the front, but maybe you can pull a little slack from the harness near the A/C switch, tuck the distributor wires under the bowl, then up behind the thermostat housing. If not, I'd make sure the clamps were replaced with an OE clamp or repositioned so they can't damage the distributor wires. It may never be a problem...... but it might.
