I recently acquired a set of seats from a 1985 4runner and have installed them in an 89 4runner. I've noticed that the passenger side does not adjust back as far as the driver's side making it uncomfortable for anyone over 5"5 to ride shotgun. Is there any way to remedy this? thanks

(You knew this was coming, right?) Do NOT, under any circumstances, allow anyone OVER 5'5" to ride shotgun, or they will be uncomfortable. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" /> Seriously, I sat here for nearly a minute trying to resist writing that, but no luck. I promise, in the future, to try really hard to refrain from doing certain things.

Seat rails are the same. I've never seen a difference. I suspect something wrong with the locking mechanism. It's really not that hard to swap rails, if you need to do so. Done it a few times for 4Runner to Truck installs.

Sounds like it is stuck forward.
When you flip the seat forward, does it slide the bottom about a foot closer to the dash? If not, slam it upright hard while pushing the whole thing to the rear.
My seat would stick from time to time in the forward position... Until I put MR2 seats in to replace them.

The seats in my 89 do the exact same thing. the driver side goes back farther than the passenger side by about an inch. (if it's more than an inch, there is something wrong). BTW i'm 6'4 and so is my bud, and he sits there (and doesnt complain, i know it's not huge tho)....

^^ What he said...
The pass seat is a one- P.O.S.ition setup... its either back in sitting position... or forward to let passengers from the rear in/out. Always remember to slide the seat back till it stops before tilting the seat-back into position... I have replaced the cables in that seat before once or twice... and doing that will improve longevity... sorry for TMI ...

When you originally installed the seats, did you check to see that each rail was in a similar position (ie: both all the way forward or all the way back)? I've pulled seats before by grabbing the adjustment handle, only to have one of the rails slide to a different position without me knowing it. When I go to reinstall the seat, the rails are offset, causing the whole setup to bind and not want to move all the way forward or backward.
Remedy: pull the seat, pull up on adjustment lever, manually slide both rails FORWARD. This positions them all the way under the seat bottom and is easier to wiggle the seat through the doorway. Loosely mount your four bolts and try moving the seat all the way forward then back a few times.
Hope this works for you.
