Getting the Wheeling Fever
Looks like I have a leak on my tranny up where the shifter is.. the one or two seals below it. Before I tackle it, is this fairly easy and doable from up above in the cab?

Thanks

oh yeah 2.6 4x4 85

Yes, you can do it from above if it's the shifter boots or shifter plate gasket. Remove the plastic stuff around the shifter, then the shifter outer boot flange screws, then the inner boot (check for tears). Then you can access the bolts that hold the shifter plate on the tcase. The tcase breather is the rubber mushroom on that plate. 4wd shifter in 2hi and tranny in N when you remove the plate...

sounds good

now that you mentioned it, it looks like the leak may be comming from above the topmost gasket you can see from underneath the vehicle

which would be better for the tranny down here in GA? manual says gl4..haynes says gl4 or 5. or does it matter much? also have some synchromesh i bought for the transfer case

Thanks

The Canucks say that GL5 has something in it that can damage the brass synchros. I'd go by what the FSM says. My $.02.

There is an " GL-4, GL-5" oil sold at Advance.
Is it okay if the spec calls for GL-4?

I couldnt find GL-4

Sta-Lube by CRC makes a GL-4 85W-90. P/N for the gallon is SL24239 and the quart is SL24229 <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

From Mitsubishi Motors TSB - MMSA TSB-93-22-001 "MT Transaxle Gear Oil" (April 1993):

"The manual transmissions/transaxles in Mitsubishi Motors vehicles require the use of API GL4 classification gear oil. Using an incorrect API classification gear oil may affect the shift effort and may cause transmission/transaxle component damage.

Use only gear oils having the API Classification GL4.

Mitsubishi Diamond Gear Lube - A991ZC2X01 - SAE 75W - 85W GL4 meets this requirement.

CAUTION: Do not use gear oils having an API GL5 classification. GL5 oils have additives which may chemically react with sintered copper synchronizer rings leading to manual transmission/transaxle damage."

FYI.
