The check engine light cam on and i had it scanned. It showed th cam shaft position sensor was the problem. Is this item critical? it's a 98 amigo 2.2l? What is the position of the pulleys for timing when the belt has to be removed for proper timing? I bought it used and the previous owner stated a water pump was recently changed. So i'm thinking the timing may be out on the timing belt when that work was done?

It probably isn't indifference. Rather, the 2.2 was found primarily in the 4X2 trucks, and this is a 4x4 site. If my memory serves, the 2.2 was a Holden developed engine.
There just isn't a lot of knowledge here about that engine.

I'm Not sure ...... I wouldn't suspect that the timing is out on the vehicle. I would first price and replace the timing sensor. Or if you have access to a isuzu elctric manual find out if the component can be tested with a multi meter.
The other suggestion i have is contact the previous owner and find out who did the work and see if you can bring it back in.

thanks for you help. The pervious owner lives 6 1/2 hours away, but I did call his mechanic and he said he did not know how to repair it nor does he have equipment to test it. It get 24.9 miles per gallon on the road at 55 mph and a/c running. Is it possible to get better mileage than that. the price i was quoted was about $150.00. The timing belt and cam shaft pulleys has to be removed to replace it.

I own a 2001 Rodeo Sport 2.2L, 2WD, auto trans, hardtop. I average 19.25 mpg in town and 22-23 mpg highway. Best I ever got on the road was slightly over 25 mpg. You might try another set of tires, Michelin's improved the mileage on my old 1993 Jeep Wrangler.
Too many 4x4's, not enough time or money
