I recently bought a 98 F150 XLT and want to put some nerf bars or some other type of step up on it so that it is easier to climb into. Where would these attach? On the cab or on the rails? I noticed that the rails have a lot of predrilled holes in them under the doors, which makes me think they attach here, but the rails sit about 1 foot in, which seems kind of far away...
Any insights appreciated.

Since you have a now 10 year old vehicle, you could possibly find some factory step bars at a local parts breaker. The numerous holes you mention are for the purpose you intend.
Second, do you offroad the truck? Step bars and low ground clearance go hand-in-hand.
