I just read some of the comments of the first fire/rescue unit on scene. That was one tough rescue scene. linky I'll quote a bit here from firehouse.com First on the scene
Barrios and his crew cut through the fence and raced for the wreckage. The captain was on his radio as they approached.
The scene started to come into relief. Send five ambulances, he said at first. He got closer and saw the flames. Send 30 firetrucks, he added. Then he was there. The Metrolink engine seemed to be missing. In the head-on crash, a Union Pacific engine had shoved it violently inside the first passenger car, which was lying grotesquely on its side. Two dozen passengers had emerged from the wreckage; some, dazed, were walking in circles against a curtain of black smoke.
Barrios made his last request: Send every heavy search-and-rescue unit in the city.

From an AP article: The National Transportation Safety Board requested the cell phone records of Metrolink engineer Robert Sanchez after two teenage train fans said they had exchanged text messages with him shortly before the train collided head-on Friday with a Union Pacific freight train in suburban Chatsworth. The wreck killed 25 people, including Sanchez, and injured more than 130. In a statement issued Wednesday night, the NTSB did not say how many messages were found in the records or if any texting occurred just before the collision. However, the teens told KCBS-TV last week that they received a text message from the engineer at 4:22 p.m. a minute before the collision.

This is a pretty sad situation for everyone involved. Not the least of which are all the people that died.
Whatever the engineer did or didn't do, I think some explaining will need to be done about why we don't have two people in the cab of a commuter train to verify signals, when most freight trains do. And why automatic stops aren't used, especially on all commuter lines that have this sort of risk.
Forget about the texting. Any medical incident, heart attack, diabetic situation or any other medical incapacitation would have caused that wreck and could cause any other in a similier situation.
All to save a few bucks. Should you make you real comfortable traveling my train.

Do passenger trains even have alerters on them like freight engines do?

From what I understand, this particular train had a quasi-system where the engineer had to touch the throttle, every so often to keep it from notching down. But there was no automatic brake application or penalty brake from what I understand. Just notching down the throttle in increments to idle, I believe.
I think sort of like having to hold the throttle down on a car, but not 100% of the time.
That's basically what I read. It's a desktop control panel. I've never used one of those. Just the AAR stand and only on switchers at that.

Wow. So, no accountability should be necessary? People died. The families have the right to hold someone accountable. I think the person that was responsible paid with his life. Are you suggesting his family be held accountable or Metrolink? If Metrolink, you know their on the hook. I think this accountability thing is killing this country. There needs to be limits set, not based on how deep your pockets are. By the way, do you have a cop of coffee I can buy?
