Need a Spot

I like to know if there's is a wise way to upgrade my 4D56 Turbo Intercooler (100 hp/245 Nm) engine ? If the answer is yes here's the questions about what kind of modifications should I take to get the significant - reliable result :
1. Upgrade the stock (Garrett TD04) turbo charger with a bigger one ? If yes I need the type of the bigger turbo that recommended for 4D56; or/and
2. Porting & Polish the valve, cylinder; or/and
3. Upgrade the exhaust; or/and
4. Install Water Methanol Injection (Snow Performance); or/and
5. Can I change the head with Common Rail DI-D ?
6. My 4D56T came with mechanical injection, can it change with electronic injection so I can use Dastek unichip ?

Thanks for the advice guys, I really need it.... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

This will certainly increase output, but these engines are not renowned for handling increased boost very well. Expect reliability issues.

Not worth it. Polishing and porting is for high revving engines.

3. Upgrade the exhaust; or/and
This gives some improvement.

Dunno.

I doubt it, unless you add all the electronic bits.

No, there is no ECU to re-map.

Summary: The 4d56T is a hard worker. If you want a performer, get a later generation TD or a petrol engine. Diesels are not as easy to "upgrade" as petrols.

I've read that propane injection gives a good performance boost and also gets you better mileage, but have never seen it. Search the diesel forum for "propane", and you'll get some info.

Thanks for giving me some opinion... Well, its not as easy as I thought. I think modified the exhaust is the safe one and adding cold air intakes ?!

Exhaust is the simplest and probably least expensive modification. After that, things get more complex and expensive. I'd go for an intercooler upgrade next, then possibly a different turbo. I don't know much about selecting the best size turbo, so I'd spend a lot of time researching before I went that route. "Cold air" intakes are probably not worth your time on this truck.

Finally, a propane injection system that was set to come on at a certain throttle opening or boost pressure would help with hills, passing and towing. Lots of howtos online and commercial kits that could be adapted. But, again, lots of research before hand.

I'll probably never do more than the exhaust upgrade.

Wow I really cant believe some said the following "Summary: The 4d56T is a hard worker. If you want a performer, get a later generation TD or a petrol engine. Diesels are not as easy to "upgrade" as petrol's." Your right the 4d56 is a hard worker. But the hole Diesels are not as easy to upgrade as petrol's it 110% WRONG. Dollar for Dollar diesels respond better to upgrade parts than there petrol brothers. My 4d56 has been running 25PSI of boost for 6 months now with out a issue, it has a home made snorkel, and a custom made 3.5 inch exhaust. And the best part is im back into the 20-25 MPG range with 35 inch tall BFG MT's. I would put my 4d56 up against any other petrol version any day of the week and i will make more power, get better mileage, and have less trouble doing it. There is nothing more reliable than a simple diesel. O yeah in case i forgot i run used fryer oil in my truck to at a 50/50 blend and am getting ready to install a new intercooler or add a second stock style intercooler.

I was hoping you'd post here.

Could you tell us what you are using for a turbo?

I am amazed that the stock turbo can boost to 27psi.

Standard is around 9psi?

My Di-D boosts to 19psi but has a lower compression ratio - only 17:1.

I doubt the longevity of the 4d56 running at 20+psi, and stick to my guns that I would not advise it.

Do you have an EGT guage fitted on the exhaust, close to the head? What temps do you run?

PS That's my opinion, and it is worth what you paid for it.
