My buddy can't get the pulley nut off his alternator (1995) so he can replace the bearings. He has it clamped in a 3 jaw chuck and a long breaker bar and still no go. Anyone ever been there?

Impact gun usually works very well.

Erik is dead-on. When all else fails, break out the impact gun. It provides a shock factor to the bolt that you cannot get with even the biggest breaker bar. Soak it with WD-40 or your favorite loosening agent.

I took it off with an impact but when I had to put it on I did it too loose and ruined the thing.
