Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hi guys,

Sorry for the dumb question, but I have a hard start issue with my truck at temps under 15C. It will idle rough and smoke when it misfires, but once I start to drive the truck for 30 seconds or so, it will totally smooth out and no smoke.
I thought it would be a glow plug issue, but when I checked all four with test light to positive bat and glow plug tip, they light came on, meaning the glow plugs weren't burned out. Resistance was at 0.4 OHM all four.
Hence my question, do glow plugs work but loose their efficiency to produce heat?
Any info would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks in advance!

Ken

all of our pajeros do that in cold weather...its because we don't have a timing advance on the pump for cold-starts. just make sure you have a block heater and it should start a little bitter. but don't be surprised to see a little smoke and have th chug a bit.

You can also make the glow plugs 'click'...'clonk' 3x, I thought it made a difference last winter.. but I also have the winter pack?

Thanks for the quick response torquemonster! I think I saw your truck at the IVOAC M&G. Was that you?
I understand that I can't expect a 4d56 to perform like a newer TDI, but mine smokes and chugs at +15C parked indoors.
I would expect that below freezing, but at +15, that's a bit strange I thought...
So far, I've changed the oil to Lucas synthetic 15w40, air filter to K&N, tried blocking EGR with no difference, pulled out the glow plugs and cleaned them out.
Next I thought would be timing, or glow plugs are working but have gone bad...

Thanks for your response, appreciate it!
I did do the 3x click clonk, not much difference on mine unfortunately.
I found a set of 4 Hitachi glow plugs for $60 so I might try those...

not sure where you are located, but a trip to a shop that is able to do a tuneup would be a good idea. Have the valves set, injector pump timed and injectors cleaned. Your truck will thank you. I took mine to cvi in Richmond BC. It was well worth the trip.

Thanks for that! Yes, I've heard and read about CVI in Richmond BC, only wish there was someone like them in Calgary...
Would anyone have feedback on Pro Active? I hear both pro's and con's on the Delica site - more pro's than con's mind you.
I read here that the resistance on the glow plugs should be around 1.0 OHM and mine are all 0.4 OHM. So that's why I now suspect the glow plugs more than anything, if glow plugs do in fact go bad but still light. If my high school memory is correct, less resistance = less heat?

sorry 4 thread jacking but give this a try

Remove the intercooler, disconnect hoses and as much of the bracket and associated wiring harnesses as you can and spray 1 can of carburator cleaner and swish around for a couple minutes then drain out. Make sure you rinse out the carb cleaner very well(wouldn't want to reinstall the intercooler and turn over your engine and watch in horror as the tach hits 7,000+)with lots of water and dry completely(I used a hair dryer on mine, making sure not to heat up the intercooler too much, allowing time to cool down. I've heard of people hooking up the intake of the intercooler to the outflow and rev the hell out of the engine to blow out the built up crud inside the intercooler aswell. Re-install. I'm not car-savvy and this took me less than 2 hours hood open-2-close.

Hope this helps!

How did you measure the resistance of all 4 plugs?
Try to clean the plate that connects all the plugs, maybe you have a bad contacts here.
But anyway, at +15 engine should start easy, even you have no plugs at all. I would check the injectors. If injector doesn't spray properly (leaks), the cold engine can't burn the fuel. When temperature rises the engine is able to burn anything the injectors supply. It seems similar to your condition.

I will give it a try for sure. Sounds like something that should be done anyways.
