i have a 1995 truck. 22re, 5 spd.
My charge light and parking brake light are on intermittently.
i'm thinking bad ground. looking at the wiring diagrams in a Haynes manual, you can trace these two lights back to a relay they call the Charge Light relay. i looked quite a bit and could not find that thing.
Does anybody have an idea?

The charge and brake light flickering is a very common occurance when the alternator brushes are going out. See this article for replacing the brushes.

Resist the temptation to swap out your quality factory alternator for a cheap rebuild, most here will strongly suggest just replacing the brushes on your current alternator.

thanks for that. I'll check the brushes out.
but The lights are not flickering. they are either on solid or off. and they don't go on or off very often. today they were on solid all the time. did not go off.

Theres a FSM (factory service manual) thread at the top of this forum that has a manual for a 1993 that should work for your truck

Look through that manual and you should find locations and a better wiring diagram.

Yeah, I saw that. I've been looking through it and cannot make sense out of it wrt to wire routing. It does not show the relay I'm speaking of at all. I'll continue to look and I'll change the brushes on the alternator. even if that's not the problem, its not a bad thing to do.

i just called Toyota to order the new brushes.
the dealer part number 27370-35060 is for the entire holder, springs and brushes which for me is $33 here in Canada.
the brushes themselves are a different # only $5 each. I thought it would be better to get the whole assembly. I have to do it after work tomorrow so it'll be quicker and I'll have new springs too. worth $20 IMHO.
thanks for the tip and I'll update this thread with results.

Edit:
I measured the voltage with the truck running and the old Alternator put out 14.25 volts so it looked good. I took out the alternator anyway and its a good thing I did. the belt would have never lasted the winter. SO I changed the brushes and took it to a shop to test it and it runs perfectly at 70amps smile I'll slap it back in tomorrow and see how it goes. I doubt that this will fix the warning lights on my dash but we will see.

well. new brushes and a belt did not fix my problem.
I'm back to the drawing board looking for that elusive charge light relay.
does anybody have anymore ideas?

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Or just pull the bulb on the dash. My charge light relay (1982 model) is located on the passenger side near the kick panel, Grey box about the size of a quarter. I have heard of others just simply pulling the relay. It is a pretty priecy item from Toyota last time I checked.

thanks, If I can find the damn thing I can replace it with a similar relay. I'm not one of these guys that needs to have original parts. A relay is a relay. as long as it is is the same function it doesn't have to be the same fit and form. but that would be nice.

well I did nothing and yesterday the warning lights were off all day. they blinked on for a second once.
i'll put a stereo in the truck today and keep a lookout for bad grounds.
it has an aftermarket stereo in it now that was put in my the original owner so that needs to be inspected. Its an old Tape deck that needs to go.
