It is the V4AW3, made by Aisin Warner. Any competent Toyota shop should be able to service it... but it begs these questions:

a. do you have one?
if yes to a then...
b. how do you like the engine?
c. what's wrong with your tranny?

PHIL,

I used to have a 4d56 in my Gen1. I was never impressed.
I now have a 3,s Di-D in the same Gen1 and is HYPER-impressed.

My son has just (4 months ago) bought himself a Gen2 2.8 LWB, 5spd.
I drove it quite a bit in the last two weeks.

It is a very nice engine.
Way better than the 4d56 (in my opinion) as far as power and smoothness goes.
Not the power of the Di-D, but more than adequate.

I think you will be suitably impressed. Fit an EGT guage for safety, since they have a reputation of cracking heads if abused (high EGTs).

Thanks Gerhard... I was hoping for that kind of feedback!

EGT is going on, as well as a real h2o gauge, etc...

Watson, are you anticipating problems with your tranny, does it already have troubles, or are you just looking to do fluid/filter change?

What model do you have coming, and when are you expecting it? Would love to see a picture of it...

I am in the process of having a coolant level switch installed, to protect me against a burst hose / radiator.
