I was never impressed. I now have a 3,s Di-D in the same Gen1 and is HYPER-impressed. My son has just (4 months ago) bought himself a Gen2 2.8 LWB, 5spd. I drove it quite a bit in the last two weeks. It is a very nice engine. Way better than the 4d56 (in my opinion) as far as power and smoothness goes. Not the power of the Di-D, but more than adequate. I think you will be suitably impressed. Fit an EGT guage for safety, since they have a reputation of cracking heads if abused (high EGTs). Don't ascribe to malice anything that can be adequately explained as stupidity!
