Getting the Wheeling Fever
would the awd/4wd transfer case from a 1992 montero fit a 1991 montero?
i think it would be nice to have AWD for the snow lol

should fit with the tailhousing from the 92. keep in mind you'll need custom driveshafts and probably cut a new hole on the floor since the shifter is on the opposite side on the gen2.

Dunno about the LHD North American units, but the Japanese Domestic Market models have the t-case on the left of the shifter in the 5sp, and to the right of the shifter in the auto... is it on the same side in both versions in the NA Montero?

Active-trac/Superselect is the single biggest improvement of the genII over the genI, IMHO.

On my 89 and jon's 90 autos, the t-case shifter is on the right of the transmission selector and on my 95 auto its on the left.

Aside from routing the shift linkage, re-do driveshaft, would it be a direct swap ?

Really looking at this option for an oldie Montero.

No one on this board has done it. If your serious about this swap, get the active trac case out of a 93/93 along with the transmission tailhousing and you should be good to go. You'll have to figure out how to get the speedo to work. The gen 2 uses a magnetic pulse input. The function of the case is controlled by the shifted lever. The switches for idicator lights will not be needed for the case to function.

Speedo didn't cross my mind.

Thnx.

I could always swap out the speed/gauge cluster and grab the 4wd control unit box behind the cd deck.

Surprised no one's tried/done it.

Having the awd up north is great on icy/snowy roads.

Miss that on my 89

Sure. I had a Gen2 active trac bolted up to a Gen1 KM148. I had to modify the Gen2 tailhousing to make it work.
