Best way to label incremental-sized round needle files? #908670 10/05/08 08:12 PM

Hi guys, I bought myself a set of round needle/chainsaw files in 1/32" increments from 1/8" to 3/8" for various jobs around the house/shop/truck, and the size stamps are too shallow to read clearly, never mind being wrapped all the way around the skinny tangs. Has anyone got a suggestion besides painting the tangs, for which I would have to have a colour/size table somewhere in my toolbox? That's the only thing I could come up with... They're still in their parts bags with the size ID on them for now.
Thanks,
Duncan

Hmmm, while I was out I decided I'm going to try a wood block with the holes labelled and drilled to the appropriate size. Might take up some bench space but at least I [probably] won't use a 9/32" file as a 1/4" and then wonder why the parts fit is sloppy.

Paint sticks. 2 colors. One dot for 1/8, 2 for 5/32, three for 3/16, 4 for 7/32, then new color for 1/4-11/32, and no dots for 3/8.

I like it! I'm going to give that a try.
Thanks. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

Assuming it has the square pointy end (is that what a "tang" is?), can't you drill a hole and run some wire through it with a stamped tag stating the size of the file? If you wanted to make it really durable, you could use the plastic coated multistrand wire with a crimp nut to fasten the two free ends together after hanging the tag...just a thought.

Following that same line of thinking, you could use some pastel ribbons or lace or something....

But, Eddy's idea sounds like it would work best. It's what my Dad did for his files.

Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...

Yeah, that's right...why don't you post up how long the ribbons and lace lasted on your tools before you switched to Dad's tried and true method? Now, THAT would be useful...

LOL @ the ribbon and lace. Should I get pink ribbon or purple?
There's no practical way to drill the handles for tags, since the files are about the same diameter at the handle as they at the working end... under 3/8" and round. That's more challenge than I care to undertake just to label my files! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />
I'll stick with the paint dots.
Thanks!

If you try to drill file steel, I'd like a pic of the bit afterwards....

I'll go back to my fetal position in the dark corner of the room and chant "please daddy don't do the bad thing" while stroking my pastel colored ribbons and lace...thanks guys... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/baby.gif" alt="" />
