Getting the Wheeling Fever
All,

After 2 bad heads from the rebuilder, I get #3. It looks good. I have it installed.

20 miles or so down the road, I hear expensive noises from the top of the engine. Back to the mechanic. Here is what we find:

http://digitalpics00.no-ip.org/~halatos/Engine100608

What I noted immediately is that two of the exhaust rockers had migrated forward and were touching the intake rocker tips, resulting in the expensive sounds. As best I can tell, no damage has been done so far. But it is apparent that the head was assembled incorrectly and the wrong springs were used.

Can anyone tell me if the exhaust rocker shaft is supposed to have different length/wire diameter springs from the intake? It looks like the exhaust springs would need to be longer/stiffer to do the job, and I think the guy who built this head mixed them up.

Thanks,

Chris

88 parts manual shows only one type on both sides, MD021211. However, I don't see any wave washers that also go on the shaft which would take up some slack. May have also used a spring that had been severely overheated and lost tension. May also have a cam with non-flat lobes, making the rocker walk sideways. Looks like a crap rebuild. Rocker slipper may also be worn on one side, for same side-walk.

Good points.... Also a cam with a taper ground into the face will do the same thing.
