Just got a line on an Eclipse engine fresh out of the machine shop. I am not sure if it is the narrow or wide bellhousing.

Can it be done with factory parts, or not?

Ed

Well first problem is mounting it to the trans. The eclipse is a narrow block and the montero is a wide block. You cant change the bell housings around as far as I understand it but you could get a 2wd narrow block trans in the 2.0 5spd D50. If its possible to swap things around then your good to go.

I was kinda hoping to keep this trans, as it is stronger. It has a 4 bolt mounting from trans to bellhousing.
Could there be a bellhousing to make it work?

Thanks for all help...

Ed

I'm really not sure if there is. I do know that a lot of the strong parts from the 2.6 turbo tranny will swap into the 2.0 tranny with some mixing of parts. Maybe try mightyd50.com lots of guys doing 4g63 swaps there into lowriders, so its a start. I know of a guy who put that motor into a samurai years ago but he used a toy trans and custom bell housing.

The next problem were the way the intake and turbo face. Thats just cutting and welding tho.

(edit) I just did a quick look for wayne with the sammy. He used to have a forum dedicated to doing these swaps but I couldn't find it again. He goes by rotozuk on most forums so a look around may find lots. Also check out http://projectzerog.com/ (end edit)

Hope this gets you started.

Actually I think there was a bunch of progress into swapping the turbo stuff into a 2.0 wide block, block. Now I have to go digging again. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" />

ok heres how it breaks down....
2.6 auto/standard transmission/block = wideblock
2.0 AUTOMATIC= wideblock 2.0 standard= narrowblock

so if you find a pre 94 eclips/talon/laser with an automatic your set

now granted if you get the 2.0 auto your gonna get the smaller turbo and the overall not as fast motor so of course youd have to PUMP it up
good luck
btw theres a AWESOME wideblock vs. narrowblock sticky on mightyd50.com

Hi Ed
Appears no one seems to notice that you want to use the iron case 5 speed.
Busher has a bellhousing that mates to a GM automatic and there is also one that mates to the Toyota & Jeep manuals.
Either of these would allow for an adapter at the face of the trans case.
But to answer your actual question, there are no factory parts that will get that transmission onto a gasoline 4 cylinder.

Cheers, Charlie

Hmm I see some misinformation here. No eclipse ever came with a wideblock. Trucks did get both, so the 4g63 you want is in 87up 2.0 g63b trucks with an automatic transmission. See here for more detail:

No there is no off the shelf way to use your stock 3.0 trans with any 4G6X series of motor. What you can do is source the g63b wideblock from a truck, drop all the motor bits with the exception of the crank (keep the truck crank it is known to be forged) into the truck block, and use the 4Cyl montero trans.

Any other questions feel free to ask. I've done the 4G64 wideblock swap into my quest, and am really considering it for my Montero.

I'll keep looking things up & see what I can do.
Thanks for all of the info.
This is a fresh from the machine shop engine done up with a larger turbo & all the goodies. I guess I can go over this weekend & measure it to confirm wide/narrow.

Now, as for the trans to bell interface, does anyone have the dimensions? Could it be similar/same as NV3/4XXX, AX15 or others that would allow a bellhousing to give us different engine combinations?

Thanks... Ed

From what I can tell, the Mitsu V5M series of transmissions are more similiar to an old Ford toploader as far as bellhousing pattern goes. Set far apart with four bolts.
