My jeep is acting like it's got a burned valve. It runs really rough at idle (missing). I have not pulled the plugs or done a compression check yet but I do have a spare 258 that was rebuilt about 30K ago I was working on (its dissasembled now). If that is the problem, would I be able to stick that head on, with new lifters and pushrods, without any machine work or would that be a bad idea?

Sure that'll work finr.. I betcha 99% of all head millings are useless. A slightly warped head was warped when it was ON THE ENGINE! It gave no problems then and when reinstalled it will torque down tight again. Big Jim

Thanks Jim I'm thinking if I pull the head I might as well look into a 4L head swap. Josh

That swap can getcha into a lot of time and trouble.. I think I would pull the offending head and lap a new valve in place (leaving everything else alone) and reinstall it! Then If I wanted an engine with the 4.0 head I'd be building one in my shop to install the complete engine in the future. Big JIm

Jim You're probably right. I mean if it comes down to really upgrading a 258 the best bet would be to just find a pulled 4.0 and stick that in. Josh
