Getting the Wheeling Fever
yes i have 2 of them but i got to messing with it again the other day and finally changed th fuel filter and it worked fine for a couple of days and then did it again. so i ran the codes again and it shot me a 43. so i ran up to autozone and had then hiik it up to the obd2 and it pretty well said it was the coil so i bought a new one and i have had no trouble out of it till today its still dieing. now when it was running like hell it would backfire sometimes so do you think i may have fouled out a plug or something im just getting really tired of working on this damn thing. it seems to be fixed for a few days then right back to the same thing all over again, i have oly had a check ingine light one time it was right after i changed the fuel filter but it was late after i got it done so i didnt take it up to run it till the next day and it wasnt on the next morining when i went to laeve so i dont know what is going on with it. so if you guys have any more ideas please let me know im getting so tired of the thing im ready to trade it in but its paid for and i dont really want another payment so if you can help it would be greatly appriciated

thanks guys

Marty

If it is really OBD2 (some '96 vehicles were, some weren't) then I would find someone who has a better scan tool, not just a code reader and look at what everything is doing. I have one that hooks up to my laptop and allows me to monitor all of the sensors and outputs and such, and I have used it on my Æ99 XJ and otherÆs vehicle; it was most helpful in trouble shooting electrical issues.

yea its an obd2 i have changed the plugs today and it just keeps ding it. the code reader says its all ignition issues so thats what i have been changing. i dont know why it keeps doing it. it tried to dy on us on the way home today. it usually jst sipts for a socond then its fine it took me almost a mile to get her running right again so it has to be fuel or fire and the fuel is good. im not getting a check engine light and thats what makes me tink of it being those two and the only trouble codes i have got are 12 55 and the 43 code so i dont know what its doing. i love this jeep but im about to get rid of it cause im tired of working on it. where did you get the software and cable to hook your laptop up tto it? and how much did it run price wise? cause i need to hook it up to something? i know a guy that has a auto shop but he charges 35 bucks to run it and he is always swamped so i dont know when i can get into have it run. well thanks for all the help guys im pulling what little hair i have out trying to figure this thing out.

thaks so much

Marty

I don't want to sound like I am advertising for the company or anything, I am not affiliated with them at all, but if you Google ScanTool you will find what I was talking about.

Ok Mr after reading all this I am strongly suspecting the ignition box. Should cost bout 25 or 30 bucks and a failing one often does just about what you have described here. I had one once that was acting up and kept a bag of ice on it till I got back home.. They frequently act up when HOT and act nice when cold.

well thank you jim. do you have any idea where it is located on the vehicle? cause i found the diagram i was looking for and it has an auto shutdown relay that runs just about everything under the hood. so i switched it with one of the other relays i know is good and so far so good but i dont know cause everything i have done to it is runs fine for a couple of days before it messes up again so who knows what will happen. and it seems to run good no matter the temp. sometines it acts up only when its cold and sometimes after i hae been driving it for a few miles. so im not saying your wrong but do you think it still could be that even though it still does it pretty much whenever it wants to hot or cold? and the stupid thing about it is it really likes to mess up after dark. it can run fine all day and i go somewhere after dark run in to the station really fast or sit somewhee for 2 hours but as soon as it starts getting dark it tries to mess up like its trying to tell me its bed tome or something. but i dont know so if you can help any further it would be appreciated.

thanks again

Marty

I also think you could have a faulty connection where your wiring harness meets the ECM, this connector is located on the passenger side firewall. Have someone start your vehicle while you move the wiring harness to ECM connector. If it stalls then you have what I found to be a common problem with grand cherokees that stall or stop running. To fix this problem you will have to move the wires one by one until you find the faulty connection or connections. Mark the wires and then replace the pins on the harness one at time. It is usually the wires to the coil or map or distributor or crank - cam sensors. This is a simple but time consuming repair that most mechanics never find.

I found the above on another site..gooGle is our friend..

thank you jim. cause i swapped the relay last night and she is driving to get me since my jeep is down. she has drove it about 5 miles now and its right back to the same old crap again. so ill check it when she gets here. so where do i get the pins to replace them at? im not an electrical kind of guy usually when something electrical goes wrong they get out of my driveway real fast but this is her car and she loves it to much to just get rid of it and she doesnt want a payment.and i dont blame her cause i really dont want to pay one right now either. do you think the ecm could be bad too? i have done so much to this thing i feel like im reaching in the dark hoping i dont get bit. but im pulling what little hair i have out.

and on a different subject my 93 grand cherokee limited is having tranny problems it goes fine unless i have to get on it for any reason then it wants fo fall out of gear everytime i stop and i have to rev it up to get it back in gear and then it only wants to stay in 1st or 2st gear. and even if i get it driving fine when it gets hot from driving it it will only go up to 2nd gear if i stop or slow way down unless i run it up to 4 or 5 grand then it will shift most of the time sometimes it wont even after all that. would it be worth rebuilding? or any other ideas? or know of a place i can get a different tranny reasonably priced?

thanks for the help

Marty

Oh man! That tranny sounds like it is starving for fluid...which means a new filter is in short order!!
