Getting the Wheeling Fever
So I just dropped in a used 22re into my 85 pickup. When I turn the key I can only hear the starter solenoid clicking, but no turn over. Doesn't have a clutch start cancel. I had to put on a new slave cylinder in so no clutch pressure right now (don't know if that has anything to do with it). All electrical hooked up, battery charged, grounds look good, starter is good.
WTF...any thoughts?????? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />

Are you absolutely positively 100% sure that the positive battery cable is connected at both ends?

You hear the solenoid clicking which means the control side works fine, you need to focus on the insulated side of the starter circuit or the starter itself.

Most starters have some sort of jumper between the motor terminal on the solenoid and the motor battery terminal. Inspect the wire and make sure it is not disconnected.

With the headlights turned on, crank the engine over. Take note of the decrease in brightness. Refer to it as the poor mans battery tester.

So I take it you didn't check the starter contacts while stuff was torn down, or presuming good when you started?

Battery terminals nice 'n secure? Got good strong dash and headlights?

Quick voltage test you can do to isolate the source of the problem:

May be the contacts in the starter solenoid or a poor connection in the ignition switch circuit.

I think I messed up on my description of the problem. There is a relay or something behind the passenger side dash speaker that is clicking when I turn the key...not the solenoid. It clicks whether the clutch pedal is fully depressed or not. That seems to be the start of my problems. Hopefully this helps trouble shoot this. Sorry for the confusion and thanks for the help if you can provide any

That is the Circuit Opening relay and it always clicks when you turn the key because it is supposed to turn on when you turn the key to the START position. When there is a problem with the starter not working, folks often assume that the clicking is the cause of the problem. Actually it is more a symptom in that the only reason you are hearing the clicking (that is always there) is that there is no noise of the starter motor cranking the engine over to mask the click of the CO relay.

So, put a volt meter on the small wire connected to the starter solenoid as described below:

[Linked Image]

And see if you are getting voltage there (under load) and then start with that finding.

If you are getting voltage there, you have an issue with the starter or solenoid:

If no voltage is getting there, you have a problem with the wiring or ignition switch and some options for repair are listed below:

Start working backwards from the starter. First by running a boostercable from your battery (pos) to the terminal on your starter motor (not terminal on solinoid). If starter turns over you eliminated it as theproblem. And keep working backwards in the system. Next would be solinoid, arc with a screw driver from the large terminal on the solinoid to the small term on the solinoid. If the starter turns over solinoid is not the problem. Keep working backwards ........
