Here is another thread for us new guys.
I know there is a fair amount of information out there scattered about in reference to the upgrade path for a 4 cyl Gen 1 SWB using Gen 1 V6 and Gen II parts.
I was thinking how great it would be if there was a thread on all of the parts you can bolt on to a Gen 1 4 cyl that come off of a V6 or Gen II donor.
Does anyone care to offer a list?
Or possibly refine what is below?
__________________________________________________
What is the factory swaybar upgrade?
What are the desired control arms?
What are the desired LSD/locker/rear disc conversions?
What are the brake upgrades?
_________________________________________
I'm looking into factory "upgrades" only, IE brakes from a V6, etc...
Correct nomenclature and P/N's would be awesome!
Thanks guys!!!!

None of the U.S. gen 1's had disc brakes that I'm aware of. There were disc brakes available for the Aussie and UK models (Pajero) but shipping on those parts is a pain. The other option I have looked into as I personally don't want to do a full axle swap from a second gen is to check the bolt hole pattern on the second gen rear disc brake caliper bracket with that of the first gen to see if they match up. If that were the case the a rear disc swap would be a bit more viable. One thing I have read in other posts is that the V6 did have larger front discs than the four banger and the second gen had larger calipers than the first gens which bolt up to the same caliper bracket (posts on both) as well as the upgraded suspension ie. rear trailing arms, rear coils, rear sway bar, and front sway bar.
Do some reading. The guys in here have provided a wealth of knowledge, ideas, and experience for the benefit of everybody.

Russell did the V6 sway bar upgrade, IIRC.
Joe did the GenII UCA swap on a 4 banger.
You need the locker out of a Montero Sport that's leaf sprung. Landraider did it. Fasteddy has one too, but he ain't comin off it...
You can do the V6 front brakes, or spring for the GenII dual piston calipers and GenI V6 rotors for some serious stoppin action.
Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...

V6 fronts need V6 dust shield. Straight swap for Gen I calipers, need trimming for Gen II.
If doing the V6 brakes, get the booster and hose to go with.
V6 front axle (housing, etc.) will bolt in readily. With that, you have the options of LSD from StarQuest and ARB locker. (Diff year Quest donors need to mix-n-match CVs- 87 needs I4 CVs and 88-89 will use V6's. Earlier will need I4 and some spacers fabbed up.)
V6 auto tranny with I4 bellhousing will bolt up. A 91 donor gets the lock-up converter. (And some 90s... mid-year changeover...?)
Note to the above, according to a quick search on Car-Parts, the Gen II AT for 12V 3.0 uses same bellhousing as Gen I V6. This suggests a very doable Gen II Active-Trac upgrade...? (Note that shift on the fly will need the CAD dealt with.)
Note to the above, don't rush to swap the 12V 3.0 front axle to gain CAD. It is like the smaller I4, meaning no ARB.
This is all from a faded memory, correct me where I am wrong and I'll edit to keep together.

I recently did a bunch of upgrades to my SWB.
I had planned to swap in the V6 brakes, booster and calipers but ended up swapping in the Gen 2 brake calipers and rotors instead. I lucked out and found them in the local JY along with the UCAs.
I also swapped in the front axle housing from my part truck (91 V6 Monty) so I could add the rear Starion LSD. I did use the 89 LSD with my I4 CVs.
I also swapped in the V6 auto tranny (lock up converter) with my I4 bellhousing since I had the 2.6 out for the Turbo swap.
If you need help with any of the upgrades on yours let me know. Maybe we can set up another Mitsu work day.

V6 fronts need V6 dust shield. When I did mine I reused my 4cyl sheilds Bent them back a little and worked fine.

I upgraded the following OEM parts on my '88 4-banger:
Gen I V6 swaybar (stiffer, holds roll better)
Gen I V6 front brakes (I did disks, caliper brackets, and shields - did not do booster...it still brakes much better...and 88 calipers are the same as Gen I V6 calipers)
Gen I V6 chin skid (allows more air for cooling)
Gen I V6 front diff, axles, and mounts (to install the front ARB)
Gen II upper control arms (corrects camber when doing a t-bar lift, is easier on your CVs, and gives more flex when no swaybar installed)

Does anyone think P/N's would be a good addition to this thread?

I also swapped in the front axle housing from my part truck (91 V6 Monty) so I could add the rear Starion LSD. I did use the 89 LSD with my I4 CVs.
Can you confirm on this one? I used the I4s myself, with an LSD from an 87. I thought the concensus was that the SQs rear half-shafts were bigger and with more splines for 88-89. Those dimensions being the same as the V6 front CVs.
