Some of you may have forgotten that Ray live here where the weather is very friendly 99.2 percent of the time. He's got off road tires, so he needs to buy a set of Pirelli Scorpion ATR's like his buddy. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

They are great off road and very quite on road.

I have had no problem with them in the snow or mud, of course I never go any where near that stuff. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

BTW ... the Pirelli Scorpion ATR's were the top rated tire in consumer reoprts testing. They scored very well with the only poor being rolling resistance and price.

After tonights drive home in a good rain I am totaly sold on my Geolander AS/S tires. Funny thing is those were the tires recomended by a co worker last year. Once he saw I had them he reminded me.

I still have a soft spot for my BFG AT's.... And I'm glad to see a great discussion on what other options there are.

I see a lot of votes for the BFG AT's. I was not happy with them in snow, I thought they <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/ignore.gif" alt="" />

Being in the snow during 4x4Wire's January trip to Tahoe was the primary situation in which I was disappointed by my BFG's, though it was certainly deep snow I was in. Without airing down they just clogged. After airing down it wasn't much better.

Other than snow I've quite liked them. Freeway driving is smooth and quiet.

Yep, that's what they look like here in Denver in the winter, too. Few inches of snow and they completly pack up. Especially if it's wet snow. No matter what BFG says the tread is not self-cleaning. They're also quite likely the worst tire a person can buy if they're going to be driving in heavy rain.

I miss my BFGs for crawling in Moab but not the rest of the time.

Ray,
BFG 10.5 x 31s A.T.s . I lived up there in Cow Town for six years and went up hwy 88 and F.S. 7 out of Pollack Pines, all around the Consumnes River valley. I used both mud and ATs when I was up there. No need for Muds in that country.
I pasted big dodge trucks stuck in the snow on those unplowed roads, I past them all up with my ATs. The only time I got stuck was in the spring when the snow changes cfrom "dry snow" to snow cone snow. It packed under the fuel tank . That's all that ever stopped them.

Living up there with all those Psycho drivers A.T. would be safer by far for traction avoiding those nuts.

i personally run a knock off sold by les schwab, the dean mud terrain sxt... its classified as a mud/snow tire. the tread is pretty aggressive and accutally has really good road manners, excellent when off road. the key that ive found is siping... it will run you a little more in the long run, but not only do will your tires last longer but youll get better traction on all surfaces. i have never had a problem getting traction on compact snow/ice when in 4wd and on top of that, ive put quite a few miles on them and they still have most of the tread. imho... some nice all weather radials with siping.
btw, cant believe anybody brought up the big o "bigfoot at's"... dam that was a good tire, put 60k on a set and they still looked brand new.

KrzyDav, my dad gets stuck in 6 inches of snow on flat ground with his Dodge. I think that's more a function of the vehicle. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/ignore.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/evil.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Need a Spot
For a rule of thumb on what will work good in snow, look closely at the tread.
You want lots of tiny bitey edges perpendicular to the tires spin. The very small edges and the snow that packs in the tread is what actualy give you traction.
What decreases a tires effectiveness in snow is plain flat rubber surfaces.Thats why the BFGs fail.No edges in the correct direction and lots of long flat rubber to slide on the top of the snow like a sled.

Here's what a tire engineered for snow looks like...

The more your pick has in common with this tire, the better it will perform in snow

It's all about the siping when it comes to snow. That's why the LTX M/Ss do well too.
