Ok I presently have my aloy wheels on my 87 4runner but want to swap on my steelies but can't find the rest of my acorn nuts. Can I run the aloy nuts (they have the similar cone on the face of them and they look like they would work) on the steel wheels? Thanks all. David

If the alloy nuts have the self centering cone you should be able to use them.

As fine as it sounds, I tried the self-centering on my steel wheels. After a couple of months, I had to pull one of the front tires. The cones had actually "eaten" into the seat area and gouged out a small cone area. If you have the flanged nuts, you should probably stick with them. I found some at O'Reilly's here, but had to order them.

Every steel Toyota wheel that I've seen uses the acorn nuts with the cone, "conical/tapered" seat as shown here. Your alloy nuts should have the flat "flanged" seat. The two are not interchangeable.

The ones on my alloys are actually like the ones on the right in this picture. The cone portion matches pretty good with the steel wheel nut mount points ![[Linked Image]](http://www.rangerovers.net/outfitting/tires/lugnuts.JPG)

I personally would only use them in an emergency. You might try putting a couple on a steel wheel and use acorns for the rest and drive around to see if they stay tight.

I have the same set of lug nuts on my 87. I used them on the steelie spare when I had a blowout a few years back with no issues. Granted, it was only temporary, but think about it... All of our rigs came with a steel spare back then. The conical seat on the 80's alloy lug nuts was designed to work with both the alloys and the steel spare rim. They just look a little funny, that's all.
