Getting the Wheeling Fever
hey i was wondering from all the experience here how do you tell where coolant is leaking from. How do you tell the difference between the water pump and head gasket? Oil is fine, no milky stuff, and coolant hasnt any oil in it. But it does constanly drip from somewhere around the water pump. I cant be too sure without removing the water pump. I took the timimg covers off today to try and see if i could pinpoint it, but to no avail.
Coolant is leaking from somewhere at the front centre of the engine. Checked hoses and stuff, they were fine.
So some help on trying to determine the likely cause of the leak. Wasnt prepared to take the timing belt off and pull the water pump out just to see. So if the water pump leaks, does it leak in that general area, or if it is the head gasket, what should i be looking out for.

Thanks guys

In my experience, when water pumps leak, it it usually the shaft seal.

are you talking about the water pump gasket or head gasket?

the pump is alot lower then the head. check all the hoses, if you have a lot of miles on it and the t/b and w/p have never been changed do it.

going to change the t/b and w/p and hope that fixes it. it has just over 176000kms and i think the belt got changed at the 100k mark. not sure about the water pump. just need to wait for the parts to arrive.

Something to check: on the exhaust manifold side of the block just below the alternator there is a steel heater hose that goes into a right angle fitting in the block just behind the water pump. This fitting has an O ring which is prone to leaking. It usually leaks ONLY when the engine is cold. Once up to operating temp the leak stops. I would check that fitting.
