Good morning everybody,
As another lovely day is upon us, I chose to tackle my old starter, as in overhaul. Per everyone's (4x4Wire) advice, when the last one went out, I saved the original Toyota starter and put a cheapie O'Reilly's special on the truck (short on time, so it was necessary). I intend to overhaul the one I took off and put it on as soon as the other one craps out, which shouldn't be long. As the picture indicates, the worn brushes were the least of my troubles. I noticed immediately when I removed it that the cable running from the solenoid? to the starter had lost all the insulation. It was brittle and flaking off in pieces. Challenge 1 is: Can I just wrap it in good electrical tape, or ...? As you may also gather from the pic, I am pointing at a screw/post assembly that has nothing going to it. Since it is insulated with the plastic washer against the housing, it seems unlikely this is any type of ground, and there is nothing connected to it (now). Challenge 2 is: What the heck is it, and was there supposed to be something attached. Note that this is the engine sideof the starter, not the battery connection/solenoid connection side. Thanks, as always, for your input.

Couldnt hurt to wrap that wire with some electrical tape, but its just a ground wire, so it doesnt really need anything.

I couldnt find that bolt on the parts diagram here. Maybe it was a grounding post for something else?

Thanks Adam. Unless I get some alternate feedback, I can go along with the heavy strap being an internal ground. I have virtually the same drawing you posted and it does not show the screw/post assembly either, yet there it is. Hmmmm.... The issue with the starter eventually turned out to be the ignition switch (wired part, not key part). The starter refused to disengage once engaged. The brushes were worn out though, and I just ordered a set from Roger. Everything else on the starter appears to be in good shape and it passes all the voltage tests when hooked up to a battery.
