What the point of a high pinion with IFS? I know the gen1s have a skid running the length of the front shaft. I could see it with a solid axle, with IFS its all fixed doesn't move.

High pinion is used for full time operation through the gears. It is so the gears drive on the proper face whereas a low pinion drives on the reverse face. It is done for longevity not clearance.

I was thinking of the 4.90 gears available more than anything, but the HP is a bit stronger than a LP design due to running on the drive side of the gear instead of the coast side.

friend broke an 06 F350 powerstroke front diff with 35s.

I broke my IFS in my truck.

Twisted the passenger side axle stub off of the CV.

Took 33X13.50 Swampers, and a 4.3, AND getting on it hard to do it.

So, to clarify, there are weaker components that will break before the front diff, correct?


Oh yeah, this is referring to a Montero...
