trying to find out a little about what would be my best bet on changing gear ratio ring/pinion or 3rd member on my 1997 t-100 3.4 4x4 dont even know what i have now but i do have all the # off my drivers door jam you guys/girls seem to be very savy on all subjects with the t-100 so thanks in advance for any help you may have for me <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Well if its 4wd you most likely have 4.10 or 4.30 gears

This is right in the FAQ:


AXLE- Gear ratios
Axle code found on door jamb
A10A = 4.10
A11A = 4.30
4.10's usually came in manual transmission 4x4 trucks, 4.30's in auto transmission 4x4 trucks.

well i have the a11 code i am going to try to change the gear ratio to a taller gear because i am pulling a 6000 lb trailor and want to give my old truck a break it has 118000 miles on it but all of my towing is on flat ground i have always have fords i do belive that the t-100 is a lot better truck but want a little more power with out haveing to run so hard so i would like to have your ideas on gear ratio change and also thank you for your response <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

6,000lbs is over the weight rating of the truck, its only rated to tow about 5,000lbs. I would make sure you have a trans cooler, and overdrive off..

thanks but i do have a trans cooler and a oil cooler i was asking about gear ratio and the differnce it might make <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/patriot.gif" alt="" />

WHat I am saying is it wont make much difference if the truck itself is only designed to tow a max load of 5,000lbs. It will tow it, but boy it wont like it at all.
