I want to either buy a new locker or get a posi for my 1990 Isuzu trooper. I saw a posi unit on ebay from a 93 trooper that said would work for my trooper. I was wondering if I found a later model trooper at a junkyard, if the rear end would fit in my trooper. But I don't know how to check if it has a posi or not. So if anyone could help me with codes, vin numbers, or anything else that would tell me if it has a posi or not I would appreciate it. thanks

"G80" is the option code for limited slip... besides that, it will be real hard to tell apart sitting there in a junkyard since you either need a good look inside the diff or have the tires off the ground so you can spin them. also, I'd be weary of a junkyard lsd, you have no way of knowing how burnt out the clutch packs will be.

Why are looking at replacing the diff? Gear change? Worn out? Damaged?

If you might have any use for a locker, it is well worth it to do it now, as you will have to pay the same for the setup. As Rob mentioned, these units are almost 20 years old and most likely they do not function very well. Rebuilding them is probably going to cost as much as a locker.

Just something to think about.

I drive my trooper every day and do more on road driving then off road. So i don't know how road worthy a locker will be since every time I make a turn my tires would probably chirp. Which is why I would rather buy a rebuilt posi or get a good used one.

There is an options plate on the firewall under the hood.

If you don't need something for offroad use, just stick with what you have. You are right, a locker on the road is less useful. The aussie locker is a good unit. Once you figure out how to drive it, it should chirp very little and clunk from time to time. The ARB is another option (but, expensive).

As for a limited slip, it just is probably not worth your time/money. The used ones are just that, used. They are probably no good. Actually being able to rebuild them is probably nigh to impossible. New units are available, but they are expensive.

If you have your heart set on something, the aussie might be for you. The cost is reasonable and there is no gear setup needed. It actually might be the cheapest of your options.

You need to really think about what you want. The aussie locker is nice, but it is always there. Icy roads might get exciting.

A used LSD is not necessarily going to be worn out, mine worked fine on my 93 until I swapped it out a couple of years ago for an ARB setup, but there is certainly some risk that you would end up with a worn one.
