My sons 89' toyota 4X4 has battery cable issues

The "positive" side has 2 big thick cables coming off it. 1 goes down to the starter (i'm assuming) and the other is a short one that goes into a black "fuse-box" kinda thing.

They both need replaced...I popped the cover off the fuse-box thing, hoping you could just disconnect the cable inside. It wasn't even visible from the top (looking in)

Any ideas?...or anyone have a nice setup they'd like to share?

The cable goes to the fuse box, into "AM1" which is a 80 amp fuseable link (FL). It will have a copper lug terminal with a screw holding it to the FL.

The FL has to be taken out from the fuse box in order to access the connections. It snaps in the fuse box. I'm pretty sure you just squeeze the sides of it and push down to remove it. Just eyeball it and you'll figure it out. You'll have to unbolt the fuse box from the inner fender. There should be 3, 12mm bolts holding it down. Once off, you can see the connections underneath.

ok....that makes sense...the replacement cable must be a 12in one?...

ALSO...do they make a battery terminal that is capable of hooking 2 cables to it?...the way it is now, seems kind of sketchy.

my old chevy just has the one cable from starter

Look for some marine battery cable clamps, they have a separate stud and wing nut for attaching extra cables:

On my '85 when I relocated the battery, I ran one wire from the rear mounted battery to the starter then from there up to the fuse box.

I prefer the military style to the marine style. I got mine from Kodiak Industries, Inc.

However, a Google search will net you other sources.

Just did both of those cables on my '90. Made a WORLD of difference!

However, make SURE you update/updrade your grounds to the sidewall (by the black fuse box) and to the block at the same time. Will fix a lot of glitches you wouldn't even think were related!

Good luck! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
