Now for my question... I know that the idler arm is better on the Gen II's. Can I get the pitman arm/idler arm combo & use them both on my 89 V6 without too much modification? Are the Gen II tie rods usable/better?

I need to rebuild everything in the front end of mine & see this as a good alternative.

The pitman are on the 90 and 89 SWB and the 89 LWB have different thinner splines on them than 90 0n.

I want to put a Gen 2 idler arm on mine, too. The one's I've found seem to have a little play in them , but that could be an optical illustion from the angle I have to look at them half burried in the sand dune and all.
I don't rock crawl so I don't think the Gen 2 arm would do damage to other parts of my front susp.

from holding two tie rods side by side the gen 1 and 2 appear identical.

Cool... So, just stick with the gen I stuff, except for the idler arm from a Gen II? ( I can get the whole arm for what the stealer wants for the bushings)
I'm gonna put the 5.0 in after the newyear & want to replace all of my loose steering before getting back on the road.

Gen I:
tie rod ends
lower ball joints
pitman arm

Gen II:
idler arm
UCA's w/ ball joints

Any other suggestions?

Ed

I think the Gen 2 box has a different ratio 3 total turns of the wheel compared to 3 1/2 on gen 1 . Don't know if that much would make too much difference for a SWB.

OK... I might do the box.
I also remember a while back, someone found aftermarket CV boots. Mine are still intact, but pretty stiff.

I was thinking on the ratio about too quick a ratio for driving a SWB on pavement.

Also the 91 LWB has a heavier box that bolts up the same.
The Gen 2 ,?I thought you had to do some drilling?
