guys and gals............ this small but annoying problem has me tearing my hair out..... i am a mechanic and have been for about 16years and this has got me....... front hubs........have a set of AVM freewheeling manual hubs on my sporty..... every time i go for a wheel or do some serious off road work... the 6 bolts that hold the back half of the hub to the car either come loose and/or they break/ snap...... and the hub is then loose..... have tryed EVERYTHING ..... doweling the hubs the flange.....using a different grade bolt...... am using grade 12.9 bolts at the moment......taken 1thou of the flange where the hubs bolts to .....milled it to get them to sit flat......all sorts of stuff....... drilled and tapped all the bolt holes 1 size bigger.....am now using a 8mm thread instead of the 6mm.......but it still does it.......... after about the 5-6 off road run...... gotta pull it down and remove broken bolts...... and its driving me crazy........ any light on this subject would be greatly apprecitated.....

Mine does that also, I changed mine all out to Allen bolts and keep a Allen wrench in the glove box and tighten them after every day of wheelin. I even have lock washers on them. Maybe try studs with lock nuts.

Keep the same size bolts you have now, switch to grade 8 or if your metric an ISO 10.9 bolt. Drill a hole in the head of each bolt and use lockwire to secure them all in place. Secure the bolts in two groups of three, and make sure the wires are in the right direction to take a load if the bolt backs off. The bolts should not come loose, hopefully that will solve the issue. If the bolts continue to break even when lockwired together then there is something else amiss. Lockwire procedure

i will shed some light on this subject....... i pulled 1 side down tonight..... just finished and am so tired......... i cleaned everything up and it had 2 snapped bolts..... drilled and tapped the bolts out.... fitted recoils to the thread...... cant use studs or nuts...... as there isnt enough room for a nut to go on there and there isnt enough meat in the hub to clearance it for a nut........thanks for the idea dennis..... had every intention to put studs in ......only to relize at the last minute.....bugger.....you get that..... got brand new....M8x 1.25thread allen headed bolts.... drilled a hole in the top of the heads......filed smooth the mating flanges...... for sealant i used the GM thread sealant..... fitted it all up.......then threaded small split pins thru the bolt heads..... was enough length out of the ones i had to pass thru 2 bolts....... found out what the torque spec was to tighten the bolts up to.......i think that is a must....... SO........ we will see if it happens again...... wil let youknow.......
cheers and thanks for the info guys...... Ads
