HiAll,
I got my Runner 3 years old with those little vent visor things over all the windows. I didn’t like them at first and I guess they just grew on me, so I left them on...big mistake ...now the truck is 6 years old and one has sort-a fallen off, so I decided to finally remove them.
WELL the double stick tape which holds them on is really stuck there and baked/cooked hard in some places.
Does any one have a miracle glue remover or secret family recipe for removing that stuff..? Rubbing compound removes the clear coat before it removes the glue... WD40 and A plastic scouring pad removes it quite well but also removes the paint in places..! 3M "General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner" is useless, it evaporates before it has a chance to do anything to the glue... Short of sand paper and new paint, I'm really stumped...any help appreciated. If your suggestion removes some of the paint I won't hold you responsible, I've already got some paint off, a little more can't hurt

NJ,
I have had good luck with this solution in the past. Once you remove as much of the dried-on foam tape backing as possible and there is only the adhesive left, try using some de-natured alcohol and a clean / soft cloth to remove the remaining adhesive. It will take a little rubbing but it should not remove the paint. Just any wax along with the adhesive will come off.
I used this on my 87 Toy 4x4 Truck and my 98 Taco to get the decals off. The 87 Toy 4x4 Truck had this nasty-lookin pinstripe on it from yester-year and it came off pretty much without a hitch. Just wax the area again once your get the adhesive removed and it should come out fine. If some of the foam stuff does not want to budge, get a heat gun or hair dryer (heat gun preferred) and spot heat the area and it will soften it up so you can remove most of it leaving just the adhesive. And you stand less chance of scratching your paint up digging at it.
You can pick up the de-natured alcohol in most supermarkets and drug stores. It is in the same style bottle as regular rubbing alcohol, so don't mistakenly get the wrong kind.
Hope this helps.

NJ,
I removed the nasty pin stripes that the dealer added after about a year.
The residue was terrible.
I used two products. One is more residential strength and that is "Goo Gone". The Industrial strength one which did the trick was "Goof off" if you can believe that name.
Its great but strong so I made sure I washed everything well after ward and used a cleaner wax on all paint that it got on.

I also used Goo Gone to remove the pinstripes from my runner. It really does the job on adhesive if you leave it on for a couple minutes. Good stuff.

Thanks for the tips, I actually forgot the denatured alcohol at work... but since got another tip about lighter fluid which worked.
If only I had asked first I might still have all my paint
