2.6L rear main seal leak question #923454 01/03/09 05:27 PM

I'm leaking a lot of oil from the rear of the engine, with 262,000 miles I assumed that the rear main seal was shot. I pulled off the cover from the bell housing and noticed that the front facing surface of the flywheel is bone dry. With a rear main seal leak on these engines would the flywheel be oil coated?

I've found that using a dusting of baby powder makes the leak source easier to spot.

Prime leak sources are valve cover gasket and rear cam bore plug. Both can be fixed with engine in truck. You have to remove the rocker shaft assembly to get at the plug. Use rubber glove fingers to retain the lash adjusters in the rockers...

Thanks for the tips you guys. I like the rubber finger trick and will remember that one. I had to use my old cam plug on the new head and cleaned it well and used RTV, it should be OK. I wiped down the area where the valve cover and the head meet and will check after tooling around.
