the input shaft seal seal on my IFS PS box in leaking pretty badly, need to replace it. this is one of the later sealed boxes that's a PITA to disasseble, so I just got a used unit from somebody to swap the whoel thing.
In cleaning it up, prepping for swapping, I've realized this replacement unit has power steering fluid in it, not ATF.
What's the best approach at this point? Should I just expect to flush it well, and put PS fluid back in? It dosn't appear to have been leaking (yet)
I'm worried that if I put ATF in it now, it will leak just like my old one does...

Body Damage is Cool
If I remember correctly, ATF is thicker than PS fluid, so switching to ATF would be beneficial.
Besides, ATF is what the FSM calls for.
I think it would be able to dissipate heat better too.

I would switch it. You already need to bleed the system.

Just my thoughts.

Roll Me Over
Put the ports down over a can and back the adjusting jam nut off 4-5 turns and get the washer that is under the jam nut away from the housing. Cycle the steering back and forth a few times and let it stay over the can for a while. Put it on and fill with ATF. What little PS fluid is left will not matter.

This got my curiosity up. Can anyone explain exactly what is different between "power steering fluid" & ATF? Why would an oil company market a product for power steering systems that isn't up to the task?

Is there actual proof that PSF is not gonna cut it oris this just a few folks with failed power steering blaming it on the fluid? I'm just trying to understand what's best for my Toy & WHY?

Good question!

I filled my Chev pump and toy box with PS fluid and it diddnt work!

I got a new box, maybe this time I should fill it with ATF? Will that work with a saginaw PS pump?

PS is ATF. Just in a special bottle with a marked up price. Everybody does it. Think store brand is different from name brand. Not usually.... GM uses Dexron, not sure about the other brands. Toys use Dexron - I asked at the dealership.

ATF is more than PS per quart. 3.19 for ATF and 2.29 for PS

Been their did that. 2 failed PS pumps with PS fluid. On my third pump I switched to ATF and it's been 3 years now with no leaks. Same as yours with PS fluid it would leak on the shaft that the pulley bolts too.
We live and learn. NO PS fluid on my Rig....and same goes with Hydro assist. I have TG set-up and the ram is happy with ATF.
