They performed a back pressure test, at low rpm's and high rpm's. They said the readings show possible air leaks at the carb.

its been four days since the trouble. it sat in the driveway for a couple of days, and it drives without problems. I had to purchase a minivan for reliability issues. Now i can sit on the truck and take my time working on the problem. I will take others advice and start with the fuel tank and work towards the carb.

Found anything yet tomzsix?

I just found I have pretty much the same problem. The engine's fine on the lower part of the hill, but as I climb and press the gas pedal more, the engine violently coughs and dies. If I drop to first gear and crawl up the hill at low revs, then all is ok. Luckily, I live in a very flat area so hills are a weekend optional.

I've been told that it's the 2nd chamber in the carb that's not opening up when the required boost under load is needed. Not sure how accurate that is, but I'll be checking it out further.

Rob

Try an ignition coil. Theyre cheap, and easy to replace.

why would you think its the coil?? Either they work or they don't, right?? I have never experienced a bad coil. How much are they? I am going to drain my gas tank this weekend and see what comes out. I don't trust my truck to even go to Kevin C's house. I would end up having to drive under 20 mph. Since now I have a glorious minivan, I can take my time on this trouble shooting.

Sometimes they fail, and stop working all together. Sometimes they fail, and short partially internally, and overheat. A weak coil will diminish under acceleration, and load. Ive troubleshot a 2.6 raider with this exact problem before. Swapped carb's, and computers, and all other things in between.

About 20 bucks, and well worth your time to try.

Can't hurt to drain your gas, but i'd put a new coil in it first.

Let us know whatever fixes it.
