With limited funds.

Do YOU think that I would be better off replacing my entire (narrow) 85 axle housing with a 86+, keeping it stock, using my diff, of coarse.
OR
Keep my fine housing and newer shoes and upgrade the shafts with Chromoly, like Marlin or USA Alloy.

I can do 1 or the other. Also keep in mind that with a newer axle, I will have to re-fab my custom shock mounts "/\".

Suggestions are much appreciated. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

What are you trying to gain?

The newer IFS axle will give you 3 more inches of width, and larger drum brakes. No strength upgrades that I'm aware of.

Chromo shafts will be the only thing that gives you strength

With a stock motor, I dont see the point of upgrading to Chromo. I think you would benifit more with a wider axle and larger drum brakes. Re-fabbing the shock mounts on the axle is no big deal.

Yep, just strength. Thinking of going 37's next time around. Currently I'm running 35's, with 4.7's in the case with no issue (also wheel spacers). But later may be going 37's and a Dual Ultimate setup. Can a stock rear axle shaft hold up to that kind of torque? Would like to keep it Toyota, not a D-60 or anything.

I've only HEARD of a few cases of rear shafts breaking. Get the late style housing, and then upgrade to shafts later if you want. Then you'll have the best of both.

Roll Me Over
It took me over 12 years to break a stock IFS rear axle. Running a dual ultimate most of the time. I would do the wider IFS axle.

Trail-gear sells an upgraded axle as well... not too pricey (but i know lots of people hate them)

Like the others said, the stock rear should hold up, no problem.

Now, in my case with a V8, I'm going to need those chromo rear axles here shortly.....debating between chromos in the rear and longs up front, or D60/14b

I'd save the money on the chromo shafts. You can get junkyard stock replacements really cheap.

I've yet to break a stock shaft in 10 years of running 33-36's. I've have gone through my fair share of ring+pinions.

I think your rear ring and pinion will be your weak link with that extra torque. Throwing chromos in the rear would probably be a waste of money...
