Short of going out and getting stuck, how can I tell if my 4 wheel drive is working. I recently bouhgt an 84 CJ7. Re: 4X4 WORKING??? Or, with that year of Jeep, with engine off and transmission in gear, shift the transfer case into high or low range and try to turn the front drive shaft by hand. With the transfer case in neutral or 2-wd position, the front drive shaft should be free to turn. Also, you would need to ensure the front hubs are locked in position. Or you can have a buddy follow you onto a dirt road. Stop the Jeep and then tromp on it vigorously.
