Need a Spot
Stupid question here. Short of going out and getting stuck, how can I tell if my 4 wheel drive is working. I recently bouhgt an 84 CJ7.

Put it up on jack stands, start the engine, put it in gear and see if all tires rotate.

Or, with that year of Jeep, with engine off and transmission in gear, shift the transfer case into high or low range and try to turn the front drive shaft by hand.

With the transfer case in neutral or 2-wd position, the front drive shaft should be free to turn.

Also, you would need to ensure the front hubs are locked in position.

By far the easiest way is to put it in 4 and make a tight turn on a hard surface... If you can make a complete circle and it isn't jumping and complaining, it ain't in 4!

Body Damage is Cool
The above suggestions will work.

Or you can have a buddy follow you onto a dirt road. Stop the Jeep and then tromp on it vigorously. Your buddy should see all 4 tires spin (or at least one front tire and one rear tire).
