My lot is only 1/5 acre....I was wondering if anyone could save me some research time and tell me if you can trim vine plants such as a watermelon and canteloupe plant...and the plant still produce like it should? Having so little land for this stuff I would like to keep the vines to about 12-15 ft. long at the most....

Two years ago when I had my 43 lbs watermelons, I had let the vines reach about 25 ft. That was such a pain when it came to mowing the yard....my wife would have to pick the vines up and move them for me while I was mowing....and the one watermelon plant had 5 friggin vines, and not all of them produced either.

I've got the acreage, but its hilly, and most of it is away from the house. Irrigation and pest deterence is my obstacle, so I'll probably start small with some boxes from the 'sq ft gardening' book Clay recommended. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Hoping for some cukes, barrel corn, squash, pole beans, tomatoes, peppers, lettuces and onions.

Yeah, I have to deal with raccoons...a family of 5 youngens destroyed my garden last year <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" />...so before I plant this year I am going to have the city bring me some traps. Will the city bring me some bait or will I have to provide my own...what works for raccoons?

And hills can work to your advantage Rich...setup a gravity irrigation system. Everything that needs lots of water goes at the top of the hill, and work your way down from there depending on the water needs of the plants. Granted, too steep of a hill just will not work.

By the way...I expect to see some pics later on in the year.

They are fond of cat and dog food..smear on some peanut butter for added attractiveness (to the bait, not you). But really, they'll eat anything that smells edible, regardless of wether it is or not.

This might be a really unpopular suggestion, but if you are tight on space, I would dump the corn. You only get one good ear and possibly a second smaller ear per plant.

Of course, that is easy for me to say because I live in a rural corn growing area, so I can pick up corn on the way home that is less than an hour from being picked.

Ah...it's worth a try though. We are going to plant 3 rows of 4 stalks so they have plenty to pollenate...we'll just have to see. We have not done corn yet.

I read an article last year that talked about how many botanists are employed trying to increase the output reliably to two good ears. If it ever happens it will dramatically alter the economics of corn growing.

I would try some purple basil as well, it has a slight licorice tast and 2X the good chemicals to fight oxidation.

I still need to work on my list... I did find that the raised garden beds helped the Basil a lot.
