ok, all you guys have been so helpful here lately with my thumping noise and my head gasket. So now another one to ask
The other nite on the hwy at 65+ miles an hour my truck starting making a ticking noise, then a loud 2sec squeal. I took it thru the city at 25-30 miles an hour and no sound, no nothing. Let the card warm up today and it started about half way to work. Not sure what this is? Belt? fan? Any help would be great, since i do all my own work (single mom), less the half shaft I could not do on my own!
Thank you in advance
2001 Tan Kia Sportage, has a K&N air filter, Warn Hubs but there's nothing really special about it, but my 7 year old loves my KIA cuz she sits up high!

this might sound crazy but it could be your a/c belt...
well if you have a/c
but this is just a theory but on the chevy astro and some of there other vehicles when the defroster is on the a/c pump is working to pull condensation out of the air so the windshield clears quicker....
but im not even sure kia sportages do this....just trying to get the brain juices flowin and keeping this thread on top so someone who knows what they are talking about can respond

... when the defroster is on the a/c pump is working to pull condensation out of the air so the windshield clears quicker.... but im not even sure kia sportages do this. Absolutely; but in the SPorty this is "hardwire" (in others it can be computer copntrolled) ...so I have removed the little switch inside the heater control (linked to the DEF position) so "I" decide when I want the A/C on...

Where is the sound comming from? Does it sound like it is comming from the top of the engine? It could be valve slap. This is a common problem for the Sportage after it has a number of miles/hours on the ticker.

ok checked the belts, bolts, altenator. I played around with it and found that it makes the noise in 2wd only, 71+mph, anything under there is no noise, when i have to gun it to get up a ramp....... I have no clue on top or bottom, i am in the truck!
And if it's the valve slap, can i get to it? or even see it? I do my own work. Thanks

This doesn't sound like valve slap then. Possibly a fan clutch. Are you running the AC? I know in my 98 if I even have the button for AC pressed but the fan turned, the engine still pulls down. I have to turn on the fan and see that I have the AC button pressed.

And how much would that be to replace? I also don't have the AC on at all. Just the circular fan. But remember when it was cold i could hear the fan running (more or less spinning) all the time and it drove me nuts. Now that stopped. And now it's gonna be cold and yucky here again this week, so I have to wait to fix anything, if I can even fix a fan clutch? ANy help?

Easiest to get a replacement fan from a Sportage in a junk yard. You can get them from www.kiaparts.com if you want new. If your AC isn't on, then it probably isn't your fan clutch. Does it do it when you rev to high RPMs, or only when you reach 70+ mph? Logansportage <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/patriot.gif" alt="" />

Kelly are you saying your heater/ A/C blower is not working ? sometimes they freeze up meaning they just lock up and won't spin. in that case it might fry the 4 speed switch next to the blower also.
now talking the clutch fan it is very easy, you had to of taken it off when you replaced the head gasket it has the belt the alt. is took too. I would not say it's bad unless the truck over heats. PM me when you read this about what is not working.
