Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have a '91 isuzu trooper 2.8 V6 automatic 4x4. will not turn over, battery tested with load and was good, starter tested and was good. When I try to start it, the starter relay clicks but doesnt turn the starter. the lights stay bright so no voltage lose from battery. i even unbolted the starter (to see if it was bound up)and tried starting it and nothing. The trooper acually cranked and would idle for bout 5 sec. couple weeks ago but i accidently left the key on one day and it drained the battery and now it wont cranked im stumped. Please help.

Does the start relay just click once with each turn of the key, or does it click multiple times quickly? Have you checked all of the connections for corrosion;looseness? How old is the battery? Have you tried jumping it with another vehicle to see what happens? Fluid levels okay?

The relay clicks just one time. i have cleaned all terminals and all connections are tight. The battery is only bout 1 month old. I have tried jumping it and nothing. And fluids r good. The vehicle is getting power just not to the starter.

Since its just one click with each turn of the key, I'd place my bet on the start solenoid. The little copper L-terminals inside are likely either worn down too far or unevenly and its not getting a good connection. Here's a thread of mine from the way-back-when machine:

Thread.

Best of luck to you! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Also could a short cause this cause someone put a alerm in it before i had it and done a crappy job on wiring it up!!! Reason i ask is because when i push the brake the dash lights and the parking lights come on i think that could be related to my problem. What would i look for to find this short? Thanks for all the help!!

I took the starter off and tried it after i tapped on the side of it, it would crank a couple of times then it wouldnt do nothing. So i tried my starter off of my spare trooper it done the same thing. I cant see 2 starters going out at the same time.

Did you try in ON the vehicle in question or on the bench? If you tried it on the vehicle with the same result, I'd lean more toward a bad connection or corroded wiring. Have you checked all of the wires and connection points? I'd go ahead and open up the solenoid while you have it off and see what shape the copper pieces are in. Now's a good time to replace them if you have it off anyway to save another project down the road.
