This morning, my '92 didn't want to start. I've NEVER had any problems with it starting..it has always fired immediately. I tried turning it over for a few seconds, and it didn't fire at all. I then checked my fuses and relays (since I'd had that issue with the heater blower), and they were all good. I then tried starting it with the accelerator on the floor, and it sputtered, and started. I drove it about 10 miles to work. Had to give it some gas to start it shortly thereafter (I drive around between different locations during the day). It has also stalled a couple times in intersections, while I was waiting to turn. It seems to idle fine, runs fine other than when it is stalling. If I let it idle, it has a slight hesitation if I rev the engine, and only if I let the RPMs settle all the way down to idle.

My first thought was fuel filter(s)? I don't even know where it is (aren't there two?), so I'll be lookingin the manual when I get home tonite. I was just hoping someone with similiar problems could provide more insight into the problem, or reinforce that I'm on the right track?

Thank you all.

Okay, I came home from work, changed clothes, hopped back in to go to my parents house. It took a while to get started, and then it fired up and seemed to run okay. I pulled out into traffic, and it stalled. I tried to start it while rolling, and it started, sputtered, and backfired. Did that again, and then ran fine for the few miles to parents house. Thought perhaps that behaviour would aid in the diagnosis.

Your fuel filter if its similar to a Gen1 is right under the drivers seat along the frame. Should have a skid plate around it. Sounds almost like a dose of bad gas to me.

It drove fine all day yesterday. It did rain all night, and it's MUCH warmer today (so had some condensation under the hood?)...maybe something is damp? I looked at my plug wires and distro, and everything LOOKED good.

Talking out my theoretical <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/butwiggle.gif" alt="" />...

If he has changed nothing about the running, then something has changed on him, right? Under that assumption, wouldn't backfiring mean fuel that was perviously delivered and burned, is now delivered and not getting burned?

Shouldn't he pull the plugs and check condition there? What about the dizzy? When was the last tune up?

Could a bad coil (single, not the 3x2-packs) cause this?

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Sounded exactly like what my truck was doing when it was a bad coil. Hit or miss, when it was good it was fine for 2 days and when it was bad it was a chore to drive. 40 bucks at autozone and that took care of it.

Easy to check, just need to put a meter to it. FSM gives the specs.
