Thought it first to be a need for a simple rotor turn job. Had them turned/trued.....Problem still there! When I come to a slow gradule stop, the stopping motion pulsates, like something's out of round. When I brake to slow down from high speed and in neutral, the truck and gearshift lever shake like a mother, like a harmonic vibration, until slowed to about 20 mph or so. Anyone seen this on their truck? BTW, '80 4X4 longbed, 31 X 10.5 15 Michelins, new/last balanced in '94.

ditto on the u-joints. I had similar symptom and it was a u-joint even though it did not feel sloppy when wangling it around by hand inspection...

Never thought about them. They be the originals, over 200K miles. I take it they can be checked by grabbing the drive shaft and turning back and forth, with absolutely no play allowed. Correct? What made you change the u-joints MAC?

Also check the knuckle and wheel bearings and the tie rod ends for play. How? Tires in the air and grab one at 6-12 o-clock and push/pull and feel for motion. Then repeat the test and 3-9 o'clock and see if there is any play. 6-12 play (only) would indicate worn knuckle bearings, 3-9 (only) may be loose tie rod ends and play on both directions may be wheel bearings or a combination of the above.
I had similar braking vibration on my old VW. A different front suspension, but I ended up replacing the ball joints, strut bearings at the top of the shocks/springs (basically like knuckle bearings) and also tightened up the steering rack and changed out the steering shaft u-joints to fix it. Basically there was just looseness in the front end and even with new brakes (first thing that was replaced) there was vibration when braking to a stop. Tightened it all up and that vibration went away.

1. There's play there Roger. On the left front; none at 6 to 12 o'clock, but some at 3 to 9. Right front; all a bit loose (bearing). Noticed some oil dripping from a wet steering stabilizer. Will disconnect an end and see what I got for dampening. 2. Lifting the rear wheels up, with just a very slight amount of handbrake applied, the wheels spin with an uneven drag, indicating some out-of-round drums. 3. The u-joints look good and appear tight. While up on jacks, I rotated the tires, front to back and back to front. Will get to the drums later next week.

Steering stabilizer worn. I mean, with one end removed, good resistance is felt through long rod travel, but with short little back and forth movements, the rod moves easily without dampening. So, with a new one, and turned drums, these problems should be reduced. Hopefully.
