Need a Spot
Thanks in advance for any assistance provided. I have an 88 trooper with over 220,000 miles and I still love driving it. Well I did until recently. I'm told the bolt holding the harmonic balancer on is stripped. Would that mean the end of the crank where it bolts into is stripped as well? The harmonic balancer and belt pully wable now and they tell me the belt's jumped a tooth and now out of time. Any ideas on a good fix here.
Thanks again,
Steve

Body Damage is Cool
Well if it looks like my 92 2.6L amigo's pulley, then yes if they striped the main bolt that holds the balancer/ pulley then the balancer and the timing belt pulley can move out, and that is really bad.

Did the threads of the bolt strip or the threads of the crank strip? Or did the bolt brake off?

Unless you've had maintenance done that required the bolt and pulley be removed, I can't honestly imagine what would cause the threads on the bolt to have stripped, and it's kind of difficult to guess at what would have caused it even with work being done.

Is it possible that you were told the harmonic balancer had slipped, rather than the bolt being stripped? This is a common situation with these engines, which then makes the timing marks inaccurate, but it's relatively easy to work around temporarily. Is the truck running poorly now, and if so, what's the story on how it got that way. That info will help us be a lot more beneficial to helping you get back into the truck you love. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

BTW, Welcome to the 'Wire!
