I have a 1985 CJ7 monster jeep which has way to much play in the steering, and it wonders on the road. It has a 6" lift, and I do not have the power steering hooked up. (I don't want the power steering hooked up). How can I stop the play/wondering? If I put in a stabalizer bar, would it make my jeep even harder to steer?

The VERY first thing to do is to move the steering wheel back and forth inside the wheel movement while parked.. Get a GF to move the wheel while you raise the hood and crawl under the vehicle LOOKING for where the PLAY is.. Until you KNOW FOR SURE where the thing is loose you will have no idea where to start repairing. Most common are the u-joints in the steering column under the hood... Then comes the steering box... And then the steering arm links. Look real good and you should find what needs attention. Big Jim <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/pfft.gif" alt="" />

Getting the Wheeling Fever

When I did the SOA, I had the same issue; about 3-5 inches of play in the wheel. Difference is I have have the power steering hooked up due to the 36" Swampers. My power steering box was shot so I replaced it, the steering arm links, bushings, and sway bar bushings. It cut it down to about 2 inches of play which are in my joints of the column... That is next on my list, but I have been so happy with the results from what I have already done.. I'm in no rush. Good Luck!
