Just leave transfer in 2H and put the gear shifter in neutrel obviously. Don't ask me why, mine wouldn't tow with both transmission and transfer in neutrel.

I tried to tow mine with both in neutral and got the same result. Why is this???

With the transfer case in neutral, it's neutral to the transmission, not to the wheels. The transfer case is technically putting your truck in 4wd when in the 'neutral' position.

2 HI and Transmission in neutral is the way to go flat towing as well as on a dolly...

Also.. do your states have any laws requiring the vehicle to be registered or insured with any wheels touching the ground (ex.. in PA, you could be ticketed for not carrying insurance on the vehicle in tow if it was on a dolly or being flat towed.

The most obvious cause for driveline lockup is that the tcase shifter is not getting the gears out of engagement in N on the tcase shifter, locking the input shaft and counter gears together, in effect engaging lo and hi ranges at the same time. It might come free if it was jiggled or the BFH was applied...

I'm a police officer here, locally.

I don't need to worry about a ticket though since it only needs to be marked "in tow" to be legal.

I bought the Harbor Freight setup but I'm considering a rental at $59 if I can find one. I'll save the tow bar for a rainy day if so.

I can map out a non-highway route the whole way home if necessary. Still not completely sure which way to go. I have everything to towbar it except for the magnetic lights. Those should be here in a few days.

I've flat-towed mine a bunch of times. Just put the tranny shifter in neutral and leave the t-case shifter in 2H.

Regarding mounting the towbar the front of the rig, don't trust drilling into and mounting it to the front bumper. A buddy of mine did that and over time he ended up pulling it through the thin wall of the bumper. Try to mount it to the frame.

Also, don't forget to disconnect the negative terminal on the battery, put the key in the ignition, and unlock the steering wheel for the duration of towing (unless you feel like making turning more like a thrill-ride ).

I don't have to worry about the battery. This thing has been outside for 3 years. Battery is dead. I've been thinking about picking up an Optima for my current truck and throwing the working battery into this parts truck to see what happens when I turn the key.

Jason,

I have all those pieces and regularly use them to get Monteros and Raiders. My concern when hitching up is the threads for the welded nuts that retain the bumper bolts. The last Raider that I towed (mine) is sketchy. When I towed Ray's former blue Monty (now our Molly), no sweat - everything was in great shape. Once I find someone to weld for me, I'm planning on a different removable mount for the tow bar. The observation about the bumper fatigue above is getting to be a concern to me, if just for public safety. For a one time trip, I wouldn't worry.

If I do flat tow, I'll check the integrity a few times before I leave and a few times during the journey. Your check will be on the way soon Russell.

What you could do is set the tow bar up on the Raider you have now then take the bumper off and take it with you. Then when you get home you could put your bumper back on yours and it will be ready to pull to the trail.
