If it's the sabot loads you're referring to, those are pretty spiffy.

"long gun" gets you comin' and goin'

Yup the Sabot's are the ones .Remington put out another centerfire ammo as well called power level that is made for the 7mm and rem .300 ultra mag. I do want to get a Rem. 700 dps in the .300 ultra mag eventually as well. I really really wanna go bear and moose hunting in alaska.

300 will work on blackies; 45-70 is the answer for a grizz, tho' I must say my neighbor had some good shots for the 3 he had to kill, but then he wasn't on flat ground with 'em either.

I'll tell you like I tell everyone else-- come up while you're still ambulatory, or you'll be wishin' forever.

I wonder if I can convince the wife to use our vacations for a hunting trip to Alaska this year lol.

What are the odds you can kill an alaskan brown bear with a .300 ultra mag?Is there such thing as flat ground in Alaska, I mean hell even the seas have mountainous waves.

Plan on flyin' or just forget it.

Just because it's flat doesn't mean it's stable.
Ever try walking on a sponge? A stair stepper is your best friend for conditioning, trust us.

Honestly, if you don't shoot all the time, you need to get in some range time and work that thing.

Shoot, even my .338 ammo is $57/box now, but I still try and get out there. Personally I don't like the idea of trying to shoot while being charged- even a bluff-n-huff isn't too fun to confront and remain calm.

We took a friend's new 45-70 out last month after his bear encounters (that's where the bear trouble started last fall to begin with). Sat up some full milk jugs- the shock wave completely knocked off on jug sitting 6 ft away from the one being shot at. Pretty impressive. I think that one would be the muskox/buffalo firearm of choice.

a 300 Ultra mag will drop anything in North America. The issue is shot placement. 50 cal won't stop a bear if you hit him in the leg. The issue you have to deal with is what type of hunt do you want. 45-70 is only good for 100 yards or so, perfect for those close hunts in the timber and brush. I've never hunted bear, just 400 lbs wild boar with razor sharp tusks. I like to take my shot from a few hundred yards I use a Reg 7mm ultra Mag

45-70 is only good for 100 yards or so,
: new variation of the .45-70 cartridge was produced, the .45-70-500, which fired a heavier 500 grain (32.5 g) bullet. The heavier 500-grain (32 g) bullet produced significantly superior ballistics, and could reach ranges of 3,500 yards (3200 m), which were beyond the maximum range of the .45-70-405. While the effective range of the .45-70 on individual targets was limited to about 1,000 yards (915 m) with either load, the heavier bullet would produce lethal injuries at 3,500 yards (3,200 m)."

I've fired a .45-70, and while it kicks like a 10ga, it was pretty accurate at 300yds, albeit with a ton of bullet drop. IIRC, I did one group off a rest under 3". One of you gun gurus 'splain it to me...

Were talking direct fire not artillery

Here are the ballistics for the 45-70, your aiming 78.6 inches high at 300 yards to be on target. Bottom number are my 7mm Ultra Mag

100 150 200 250 300 400 500
zero -8.5 -24.0 -47.4 -78.6 -169.4 -301.3
2.4 2.8 2.0 zero -3.4 -14.5 -32.2

Then look at the muzzle velocity, 1330 fps on the 45-70 vs 3325 fps on the 7mm. At 300 yard the 45-70 only has 858 ft-lbs of knock down while the 7mm has 2364 ft-lbs.

So I stick to my "guns" that the 45-70 is only a short range solution and 7mm ultra mag packs 3x the knock down at 100 yards.

Cool, Les. My .308 isn't too shabby either. Plus, I can get 20 rounds downrange pretty quickly with the semi-auto action. Not that 19 out of 20 would be anywhere near the target...
