So I stick to my "guns" that the 45-70 is only a short range solution .

ACTUALLY...

Some of the longest range shots EVER made were with a 45-70.

"I got to doing some research the other day on the net and came across this article of some tests done with extreme long range shooting with a .45-70 rifle. These tests were done way back in 1879. The original loading for the .45-70 cartridge was a 405 gr. bullet backed by 70 grains of black powder. They came up with a new loading with a 500 gr. bullet and shot it "artillery style" at some targets set up 3500 yds away. Yes, you read correct, that's 3,500 yds (1.98 miles) away. It was determined that even though 1000 yds was found to be the max. effective range for aimed fire at man sized targets, the 500 gr. .45-70 was still capable of delivering a lethal injury to an enemy even out to 3,500 yds away. At the 3500 yd mark they discovered that the bullets (coming downward at a 30 deg. angle) would still penetrate through (3) 1" thick oak planks and then buried themselves in the sandy beach to a depth of 8!"

2500 yards. So..... Bring your 7mm whatever mag on.

I'm not a fan of the 45-70 either, but it seems that it's certainly a long range cartridge, though not a flat shooting one.

Body Damage is Cool
personally I believe that damage was caused by gravitational pull not the power of the bullit

Hunting dangerous game is waaaay different than an inanimate object. Give me the .300 ultra mag with higher velocity at more yardage.

Kewlynx I will take your advice and start working out, after I am sure i have the quitting smoking thing licked.I have a funny feeling I will be putting on weight. So after that I will need to work out anyway, and i will have the funds to join a gym

out of all the jeeps in this town the d**n gremlin had to invade mine

I've done so much, with so little for so long i can practicly do anything with nothing

Les is correct with mentioning shot placement with a smaller caliber. All-around rifle here is an .06 or .308, mostly due to surplus ammo being pretty popular.

The 45-70 is *the* rifle to have in our type of woods, esp in the Interior. Taiga with willows and alder that you can't see much past 20 feet thru.

A grizz's heart beats like maybe 4x/minute, so unless you're taking a distance shot, you want to be able to bring your firearm to bear PD-friggin-Q.

A few years ago, a Haul Road driver stopped to stretch his legs and go check on a couple traps he set out. Got rushed from behind. Apparently the bear had killed a 'bou, and the kill site was nearby- wasn't there the last time he had stopped.

The only reason the guy was even able to get off a shot was because he was a Nam vet and had his .45 strapped on. So with that said, do yer range time.

The Marlin my friend picked up is pretty impressive. He went to military school as a kid, so I finally got to see him do some long range shots for the first time, as we were out in a clearing that he made to proof-up the property. Talk about a lever-jackin' fool. He was making groups like Eddy mentioned. I think we stepped off about 700 ft for some distance shots. I can't remember the loads he got, other than to say that on the box it SPECIFICALLY mentions which model rifles that stuff can go thru- about 3 or 4 of them.

It's not like he's out hunting for bears- they came and kind of trounced on the door about 12 ft from where he and his wife sleep. If this stick gets pulled out, it's not for display; it's to STOP. Otherwise, he's a live-and-let-live kind of guy- just don't fool with him.

Les, I am in love with the .30-06, and have been since I shot my first one in about 1959, when I was 10. One sweet cartridge.

And I understand f=mv^2, too.

I've never fired a .300mag or a 7mm, unless the Mauser I fired many moons ago was a 7 and not an 8mm. I have fired a .458 win mag and a .450NE (like getting hit in the shoulder with a sledge) and I guess I'd prefer the lighter caliber if I had to fire more than one shot.

If your thinking about getting a Ultra Mag take a look at this recoil chart. The 300 RUM kicks like a team of mules. My 7mm RUM is right behind it and I can only get 3-5 rounds off at the range before I anticipate the pain. I don't recommend it you in the light or medium build category. Of course once it was broke it I only fire three rounds before every trip to verify the optics. At $3 a pop it gets pricy. I only use it for the big boars.

Eddy the 30-06 is also my fav all time round. First time I shot one I was 8-9.

Yeah, my .338 even with being ported shoves ya. Got a .06 that gets pulled out afterward.

Like that recoil chart Les.

Only if it was Rambo style with explosive tips. I've been tree'ed before by a pack of hogs in a florida swamp. Unlike bear, I'm not worried about the one I shoot because I know it's dead. It's the rest of the pack that scares me

The big boars in Monterey have been know to eat coyote !

We used to hunt feral hogs on 7 mile island in the TN river, way back when I was young and REALLY crazy. Some Auburn grad had imported some asiatic stock including some asiatic wild boar genes, and some of those bad boys went over 400lbs. One of my friends shot one of them in the chest with a .44mag, and it didn't penetrate the chest gristle, or even slow him down much. Trees didn't do much good, because all the timber on that island had been cut, and all that had grown back was saplings, and even if you got up one, the hogs could push it over if you didn't kill a bunch of them first, which is fun while you're hanging on to the thrashing tree and trying to aim. My weapon of choice was the 10ga goose gun with 00buck or #1 buck.

BTW, shotgun for squirrel?? .22 shorts, or rat shot .22 shells if you don't mind breaking teeth. Or use something huge and shoot the limb under the squirrel, and the transmitted shock snaps their necks and they fall out of the tree without holes spoiling the meat. I've killed them that way with a Savage o/u 22mag/20ga with the shotgun slug, after I missed with the .22mag...
