Need a Spot
I have a 1994 Toyota extra-cab 2wd with a 22re/auto. I'm not entirely sure what tranny it actually is, but my question is what would be necessary for me to changeover to run a toyota t-case? would it be easier to just swap out the whole tranny for one that already is set up or what? I'm not worried about cutting the floor for the t-case shifter. I'm also doing an SAS. Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

There are some threads covering this subject already, but here's a quick rundown of some of the things this involves:
The 2wd tranny crossmember is welded to the frame. A 4wd cross member will need to be bolted on to some fab'd mounting plates. Because of this, I think sourcing a 4wd tranny/t-case will make it easier to get it positioned / installed.
Get driveshafts off a similar body style 4wd truck, or have them made.
Swap rear axle from a 4wd, to match bolt patterns, also to get the 8" 3rd member.
You'll need to use a 4wd IFS power steering box for crossover steering. IIRC, the 2wd version doesn't work for that.
Hope that helps.

InchWorm http://www.inchwormgear.com/store/ makes an adapter that goes on the back of the auto to bolt gear drive cases to a 2-wheel drive auto. Give them a call and talk to them about what it takes.

I have seen the inchworm adapter, but i don't really want to shell out $700 for one. Why won't the 2wd steering box work? I was planning on fabbing my steering, so does that make a difference?

I don't remember exactly (it's been a few years since mine was converted), but I think it has to do with how it would interact with the crossover steering. I think the 2wd PS lines will bolt right into the 4wd box though.

What differences might I encounter when I go to do the SAS? are the 2wd frames the same width (from rail to rail) as a 4wd frame where the shackle pivots are placed?
I am a pretty competent fabricator, I am just unfamiliar with this whole Toyota ordeal.

The Toyota factory service manual (FSM) has detailed frame dimensions for these truck. In my '84 manual the 2wd and 4wd frames are the same in almost all aspects except for the brackets and crossmember. Sorry my scanner is not functioning, otherwise I'd post a copy. There are a couple of FSMs online that you can find through links at the beginning of this forum section. -- Matt

Here's a link to frame diagrams from a 1993 Toyota pickup factory service manual (the one stickied at the top of this forum section). Clicking on the link will cause a 17 page pdf document to start to download (780kb). The frame diagrams are on the last eight or ten pages. The whole '93 FSM is there for free too:

web page

This should be good for '94 as well.

I fouund a tranny/t-case combo from a 1985 that probably came from behind a 22r. I'm not sure what it is but it comes with the xmember and front driveshaft, so hopefully that will help simplify things.

Two wheel drive frames are a lot like the 79-85 frames, they arch up and give you better axle clearence.

The tranny should work but you need to make brackets for the x-member. The two-wheel x-member is welded in place where the four-wheel x-member is bolted in.

There are many sucessful 2-4 wheel conversions. You might want to to do a SEARCH on PBB and do a lot of reading before asking questions.
