Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have a 1994 T100, 3.0L V6 with 120,000 miles.

3 time I have had problems with oil blowing past the oil filter seal. The first two times required adding a lot of oil to get home. Today oil is again dripping from the oil filter. I have used several filter brands so I don't think the problem is related to a particular brand. I don't think it is an issue of improper torque at install time. Since the 70s I have done hundreds of oil changes and this has never happened on any car or truck other then this T100.

Has anyone had this problem?

Inspect the oil filter seat on the engine and see if it got nicked or stressed. Inspect the threads on the oil filter shaft/tube...it might have been stripped at some point.

I've always (well, almost) used Toyota filters and have had to tighten them beyond what the package and Dad always said - contact + 3/4 turn. If I don't put a wrench on them when installing and go closer to 1 1/2 turns, they leak.

Thanks Scott

One question. Many years ago I crushed a filter trying to get it off. I had to stick a piece of metal through it to spin it off. At 1 and 1/2 turn how are they to remove?

As for dealers and dealer parts, I will bypass the filter if I have to before I get parts from a dealer. A while back my parking brake cable rusted up and broke. I had no choice but to get one from a dealer. It didn't come with a barrel nut for the adjustment. When I said what about the nuts that go on the threaded adjustment section of the cable? The dude said "we don't have those?" He didn't look he offered no suggestion. I had to drive to a local nut and bolt company and they took the place apart to find what I needed. Every single time I need a dealer part, it's like asking them for a free steak dinner or something. I hate car dealers. It's part of why I keep my cars 20 years or longer.

Drop 30 grand on a new truck and then you have to kiss their a** for a 20 cent part.

I think its your dealer honestly, mines great tbh. Parts guy even recognized I work for a local shop and gave me a huge discount on some parts I ordered.

As for filters, I use the walmart brand which is actually a champ filter. Always tighten by hand and no issues but I make sure they are on there..

I think it's the gaskets on the Toyo filters - they are a hollow o-ring. When I've used another brand, say Purolator, with a solid rubber gasket, I've not needed to get them as tight. I do usually need to use a wrench to remove either kind - I use the kind that fits like a cap over the top of the filter. I also have one that is a square piece of pipe with a length of seat belt strap that I use when need be - it will remove even the most stubborn.

Just for kicks, see if the gasket from an old filter is still stuck on the motor. Had that prob years ago with some GM products where the old gasket stayed on............

The old seal sticking to the engine is not the problem. I have had that happen on a Subaru before. After start and pressure builds the oil starts to blow all over the place. Now I always look at the old filter to make sure the seal stayed on the filter.

I have checked the seat and there are not nicks. I wonder if the when the oil filter is old and possible starting to clog the pressure might be high enough to cause the leak? But, this has never happened to any car or truck I have ever had.

When I replace the current filter which is leaking. I will take if the seal is the O ring type or flat surface type.

How's that oil pressure looking? Maybe something is clogging up in the oil galley just past the filter?

Maybe you could run some engine cleaner through there and see if it clears it up... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
