Body Damage is Cool
I'm wearing out my nicely modified '01 Rodeo running it up and down Rt. 95 between Richmond and D.C. So, I want to save it for off-roading and towing my boat.

Any thoughts on the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Wagon? Many are getting 50 mpg or more with new common rail injection system. I've always wanted a diesel. There are no big discounts because this model is in short supply. I was going to get the 6-speed auto because I'm tired of shifting in heavy traffic.

Pop the hood and look at the engine... any user-serviceable parts under there? How much work is it to get to them?

That's funny. On a common rail, you've got 15-20k psi of diesel flowing to piezo-electric injectors. From what I've read the end-user won't want to service any of that system.

That being said, it's a great car. I think you'll be pleased with 236 lb/ft of torque in such a light car. If you're looking at an auto, be sure to check out the DSG. I've heard it's a sweet shifter plus you get paddles

Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...

I have a 1997 Passat TDI 36mpg in City and 47mpg Highway- Thats over 700 miles per tank! Mine just rolled over 200K! I don't know much about the newer ones though. I don't think they get as good Mileage DUE to crazy US emissions standards.
