Getting the Wheeling Fever
|
Greetings,
I was driving the 97 T-100 around in the snow on the roads and discovered that it is popping out of 4 hi. It doesn't forcefully pop out and it'll stay in if someone just gently holds it in place.
I drove on a dirt road in 4 hi recently and didn't have the problem but I wasn't going very fast, < 20. Now on the highway, it was frequently going out of 4wd, around every couple minutes or so.
Any thoughts on the cause and cure? Broken spring on a detent ball perhaps or something more drastic?
Thanks in advance.

I'll guess a vacuum leak in the ADD system. Could be EZ fix with $5 - $10 of rubber tubing.

Would that affect the floor lever position too? Every time it popped out, the lever had moved to the 2wd position.

Body lift? Ive heard that can cause it to pop out b/c the body angles hitting the shifter.

Ahhh...yes, it does have a 3" body lift, and that might explain things -- all the bouncing around on the rough roads perhaps causing the boot to pull on the lever or something. I guess a good test would be to unscrew the boot mount so the lever has nothing pulling on it.

Its most likely hitting the body somewhere. You may have to cut a bit to relieve it
