You will have to get everything INCLUDING the transmission since the 2.6 and 2.8 do not share bolt patterns. Why take the time/effort for that engine swap <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> The 2.8 isn't much more motor than the 2.6 power-wise. IMHO, an engine that is more of an upgrade would be a better choice.

The 2.8 is a dog. If you swap that in, you will regret it. I had one in my S10 Blazer. Go with the 4.3 Chevy from a late 80's early 90's S10 or S10 Blazer.

What is it you're unhappy with in the 2.6, and what do you want to do with your truck when it's all done? That may have some impact on what recommendations you get on options.

I think that the first thing that I would do is run a compression test on the 2.6. If the prior owners haven't been meticulous about doing the valve adjustments, there is a pretty good chance that you have one or more burned valves.

Before replacing the engine I would make sure that the 2.6 is performing as it should.

IF a guy were to swap a 2.8 for the 2.6, T-5 transmission and all, would the clutch fork be a problem? What about the speedometer gear/cable? This may not be the best choice but the 2.8 is practical and available. I appreciate your replies.

The Isuzus use two variations on the MUA transmissions behind the 2.6 and the 2.8. Both use a hydraulic clutch.

On the 2.6, the slave cylinder is on the right (passenger) side of the tranny and on the 2.8, the slave is on the left (driver) side.

To the best of my knowledge, Isuzu never used the T-5 behind either (I am sitting here with the FSM and it only lists the MUA transmission).

In addition, the tranfer case is integral with the MUA, whether in the 2.6 or the 2.8. Assuming that you want to keep the 4X4 capability, you are probably in trouble using the tranny out of an S-10, as I believe that the S-10 uses a driver's side drop for the front drive shaft, while all the Isuzus use a passenger side drop.

Even if you want to go to 2X4, you are going to have to fabricate something for a transmission cross member.

Jim, thanks for the reply. I neglected to mention the Rodeo is 4X2, so the transfer case is not an issue. It sounds like finding an MUA would be the smoothest swap Thanks again, Phil

Jim, just following up. I'm looking at the 1991 Rodeo owner's manual. It says that indeed Isuzu used the BW-T5.

According to page 8-16, the BW-T5 is used only on 2-wheel drive V6 models. All other manual transmission models are equipped with MUA type transmissions.
